Parents as interventionists: Addressing adolescent substance use

Abstract: Much research and attention has focused on addressing the extremes of the adolescent substance use spectrum: either the prevention of substance use prior to its onset or the treatment of those with a substance use disorder (SUD). Little research has looked at adolescents who fall midcontinuum. Adolescents who use substances in this mild-to-moderate range may be efficiently and cost-effectively treated using brief interventions based on cognitive-behavioral (CB) and motivational interviewing (MI) strategies. “…The results indicated that perceived parenting styles were significantly and positively related to resilience. This finding is in line with the results obtained from several studies ( 18 , 19 , 21 , 22 , 24 , 26 ). Crawford and Novak ( 25 ), who examined the positive and negative outcomes of perceived parenting styles, demonstrated that parenting styles led to an increase in resilience among adolescents.…”

“…Numerous studies conducted to examine the impacts of parenting styles have indicated that adolescents who have a parent with the authoritarian parenting style are not likely to use illegal drugs ( 21 , 22 ) and have good levels of academic achievement ( 23 ). Furthermore, a family plays an important role in preventing adolescents from abusing drugs ( 24 - 26 ). In the same line, Cleveland, Feinberg, Bontempo, and Greenberg ( 27 ) concluded that while peers play a key role in the middle and late adolescence, families play a very significant role in their early adolescence.…”

“…Finally, one program that could be beneficial is the Minneapolis-St. Paul Minnesota a Brief Interventions (BIs) program. This is a short session program (consisting of one to four interventions) and uses cognitive-behavioral, psychoeducational, and motivational interviewing strategies by using the parents as the interventionists to treat mild to moderate substance use (Botzet et al, 2019;Carney & Myers, 2012;S. Levy et al, 2011;Winters et al, 2014).…”

“…Levy et al, 2011;Winters et al, 2014). The program was found to reduce the use of both marijuana and alcohol at the 3-month follow-up for the intervention group (Botzet et al, 2019). Collectively, such policies are needed to help change the troubling upward trend of e-cigarette use among youth.…”

“…Helping the caregivers check out their current relationships and their communication skills with their teenagers, the therapists were able to guide the caregivers to judge how negative their family relationships were and how they could change their own behaviors and attitudes so as to improve their daily home environment and atmosphere. Not only did the therapists provide the caregivers with new ways to engage with their adolescents, but they also taught the caregivers how to solve such issues as their adolescents separating from them in a non-normative manner [19]. The purpose of this training program was to teach those caregivers more effective skills to deal with the drug abuse problems caused by their youths.…”
