The psychology of sustainability and sustainable development is related to improvements in people’s quality of life in different environments, including the family. Based on this theoretical approach, this study explores the relationships between parenting styles (maternal and paternal support, control, and neglect) and prosocial behavior, aggression, and self-concept of children from Spain aged 4–7 years (M = 5.81; DS = 1.05). Participants were 635 boys and girls (53.7% boys; 46.3% girls) from Valencia and Castellón (Spain). Most parents had low educational levels and low-qualified, temporary jobs. Over 82% of participants were from Spain. The other participants were from Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa, North Africa, and Southeast Asia. The results indicate that maternal support and control have the strongest relationships with children’s prosocial behavior, aggression, and self-concept, fundamentally as predictors of self-concept and aggression. According to children’s perceptions, maternal parenting plays a more prominent role than paternal parenting. Authoritarian and neglectful parenting at these ages seems to be perceived less negatively than at other ages, and the effects of such parenting may arise at a later age. Furthermore, prosocial behavior and self-concept curb aggression. These results can support the design of interventions in childhood.

ResumenLa familia es reconocida como el núcleo de la sociedad, al mismo tiempo es la institución más importante en el proceso de socialización del ser humano. Es evidente que en esta socialización el rol de los padres es sumamente significativo, ellos con su forma de controlar, comunicar, educar y dar afecto generarán interacciones relevantes para el desarrollo del niño y del adolescente. A estas interacciones se les llama estilos parentales y ellas pueden influir en la salud mental de los hijos. Esta influencia puede ser más notoria en la adolescencia, pues es a partir de esta etapa que el adolescente demostrará más activamente si se adapta o no a las pautas sociales. El objetivo del presente artículo es elaborar una revisión bibliográfica de las investigaciones que relacionan los estilos parentales y algunos indicadores de salud mental adolescente, considerando los modelos teóricos más reconocidos, su conceptualización y tipologías. Palabras clave: Familia, estilos parentales, salud mental, adolescencia, conducta adolescente. abstractFamily is recognized as the nucleus of society; at the same time, it is the most important institution in the process of socialization of the human being. It is clear that in this socialization the role of parents is extremely important; they by their way of controlling, communicating, educating and giving affection will generate relevant interactions for the development of children and adolescents. These interactions are called parenting styles and they can influence the children's mental health. This influence may be more noticeable in adolescence, because it is from this stage that the adolescent will show more actively whether or not if he adapts or not to social guidelines. The objective of this article is to develop a bibliographical review of the research related to parental parenting styles and some indicators of adolescent mental health; considering the most recognized theoretical models, their conceptualization and typologies.

Parenting style experienced during childhood has profound effects on children’s futures. Scales developed in other countries have never been validated in the Tibetan context. The present study aimed to examine the construct validity and reliability of a Tibetan translation of the 23-item short form of the Egna Minnen Beträffande Uppfostran [One’s Memories of Upbringing] (s-EMBU) and to test the correlation between the parenting styles of fathers and mothers. A cross-sectional study was conducted in a sample of 847 students aged 12–21 years from Lhasa, Tibet, during September and October 2015 with a participation rate of 97.7%. The Tibetan translation of self-completed s-EMBU was administered. Confirmatory factor analysis was employed to test the scale’s validity on the first half of the sample and was then cross-validated with the second half of the sample. The final model consisted of six factors: three (rejection, emotional warmth, and overprotection) for each parent, equality constrained on factor loadings, factor correlations, and error variance between father and mother. Father–mother correlation coefficients ranged from 0.81 to 0.86, and the level of consistency ranged from 0.62 to 0.82. Thus, the slightly modified s-EMBU is suitable for use in the Tibetan culture where both the father and the mother have consistent parenting styles.
