Parenting Styles and Aggression Among Young Adolescents: A Systematic Review of Literature

Abstract: There is ample research on aggression amongst children and adolescents that highlights several antecedents of aggression. While researchers have remarked on the relationship between parenting styles and aggression in children, there are few studies that integrate and systemize the available studies on parenting styles and aggression. The present review is an attempt to fill this gap. For this review, relevant studies were first searched, then coded and classified. As a result of thorough review, 34 relevant st… Show more

“…In another influential large‐scale study—the multinational (nine countries and 13 cultures) longitudinal Parenting across Cultures study—Lansford et al (2014) showed that maternal warmth predicted less aggressive behavior in school and moderated the link between corporal punishment and children's higher aggressive behavior in school (Lansford et al, 2014). Finally, a recent review of studies examining the associations between parenting style and children's aggression reported that authoritarian, and, to a lesser extent, permissive parenting styles are associated with children's higher levels of aggressive and other maladjusted behaviors, whereas authoritative parenting style is associated with lower levels of aggression (Masud et al, 2019).…”

“…The paucity in studies examining the associations between fathers' parenting quality and children's outcomes is particularly evident in the field of child aggressive tendencies. In general, studies examining the associations between mothers' parenting and children's aggression reported that harsh, intrusive, rejecting, and authoritarian maternal behaviors are associated with children's more aggressively biased social cognitive processes (e.g., Gulley, Oppenheimer, & Hankin, 2014; Ziv & Arbel, 2020; Ziv, Kupermintz, & Aviezer, 2016) and aggressive behaviors (e.g., Masud, Ahmad, Cho, & Fakhr, 2019; Shaw, Owens, Giovannelli, & Winslow, 2001). In addition, the association between harsh maternal parenting practices and children's aggressive behavior in school had been found to be mediated by children's aggressively biased social information processing (SIP) patterns (e.g., Crosswhite & Kerpelman, 2009; Ziv et al, 2016).…”

“…Nonetheless, several studies have recorded the correlation between parenting variables, including attitude and emotional style and expressiveness, and later child social development and outcomes (Danzig, et al 2015). The way parents communicate with their children can yield both positive and negative outcomes (Masud, et al 2019). However, different parenting styles and behaviors (including warmth and reasoning) are thought to be connected to the development of child empathy (Wagers, et al 2019).…”
