Parenting problems: research and clinical perspectives on parenting adolescents: Problemi di genitorialità: prospettive cliniche e di ricerca sull'essere genitori di adolescenti

Abstract: This paper aims to explore factors influencing the parenting of adolescents and investigate what constitutes a helpful therapeutic intervention for a parent whose adolescent refuses or fails to engage in therapeutic treatment. Three areas of research and theory are explored: findings from the socialization approach to parenting and from attachment research provide a base for a description of a psychoanalytic understanding of effective therapeutic work with parents.

“…The APT intervention was manualized in 2011 to include detailed descriptions of each session's goals and techniques, and considerations for sessions with couples or with the adolescent present in the consulting room (Jarvis, Trevatt, & Desatnik, 2011). The APT intervention has demonstrated promising results in the past; a preliminary evaluation reported significant decreases in parental perception of adolescent distress and severity of difficulties, and significant reductions of parental stress (Jarvis, 2005;Jarvis et al, 2011;Trevatt, 2005). However, the intervention has not been formally evaluated since the manualization.…”
