Objective: We used multi-level modelling of sib-pair data to disentangle the influence of child-specific and shared family influences on maternal expressed emotion (MEE) towards children and adolescents with attentiondeficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Method: MEE was measured for 60 ADHD proband-unaffected sibling pairs aged 6-17 years using the Five Minute Speech Sample. Questionnaire measures of conduct and emotional problems were collected for children and measures of depression and ADHD were collected for mothers. Multilevel models partitioned the effects of 5 MEE components (Initial Statement -IS, Relationship -REL, Warmth -WAR, Critical Comments -CC and Positive Comments -PC) into (i) child-specific and (ii) shared family effects. Results: Significant child-specific influences were confirmed for all MEE components, with higher levels of MEE expressed toward probands than siblings. For REL, PC, and CC, this effect was explained by comorbid conduct problems rather than ADHD. Only low WAR was associated with ADHD itself. Furthermore, only low WAR showed shared familial influences which were in part accounted for by maternal depression.Conclusions: MEE towards ADHD children was influenced by child-specific factors. For most components these were driven by comorbid symptoms of conduct problems rather than ADHD itself. WAR was different -it was influenced by both child-specific and shared familial effects and the child effects showed no relation to conduct problems. Further studies utilising a longitudinal design are required to establish the direction of causation and extend our understanding of the relationship between EE components and ADHD.

ResumoContexto: Muitos transtornos psiquiátricos, geralmente diagnosticados pela primeira vez na infância, estão associados a maus-tratos, entre eles o abuso físico, causando significativo impacto no desenvolvimento das crianças acometidas. Objetivos: Avaliar a associação entre um diagnóstico psiquiátrico do grupo dos transtornos de déficit de atenção e do comportamento disruptivo (TDACD) em crianças e a história de abuso físico na infância. Métodos: Em um estudo seccional, crianças de 3 a 12 anos, atendidas em um ambulatório de psiquiatria de um hospital universitário, foram avaliadas por meio do MINI KID (Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview for Children and Adolescents), tendo sido diagnosticadas de acordo com os critérios do DSM-IV. A avaliação de abuso físico e de outros eventos traumá-ticos foi realizada por um questionário específico, o LSC-R (Life Stressor Checklist -Revised) e inclui diferentes tipos de maus-tratos. Resultados: Encontrou-se uma razão de chance mais alta de exposição freqüente ao abuso físico (p = 0,02) no grupo de crianças diagnosticadas com TDACD. Não se encontrou associação entre transtornos de humor (p = 0,67) e de ansiedade (p = 0,57) com abuso físico. Evidenciou-se uma relação de temporalidade entre o grupo dos TDACD e abuso físico (66,6%). Após ajuste de possíveis fatores de confundimento, meninos demonstraram índices significativamente mais elevados de abuso físico do que meninas (p = 0,001). Conclusões: Nossos achados documentaram associação entre um diagnóstico do grupo dos TDACD em crianças e abuso físico na infância. Resumo. O objetivo desse estudo foi investigar as relações entre punição corporal no ambiente familiar e problemas comportamentais em adolescentes. Participaram 15 estudantes do ensino fundamental e médio com idades entre 12 e 15 anos que apresentam comportamentos agressivos na escola. Os adolescentes foram entrevistados sobre as práticas educativas utilizadas pelos seus pais. Verifi cou-se a ocorrência da punição corporal, e os principais motivos relacionam a falta de obediência e o envolvimento em situações de violência na escola. A punição corporal ocorre por meio da palmada, uso do cinto, murros e chutes, e isso ocasiona reações de raiva, tristeza, medo, e a avaliação dos jovens de que os pais estavam estressados no momento dos atos agressivos. Foram identifi cados relatos que aprovam o uso da punição corporal de forma moderada, o que evidencia a transmissão intergeracional da violência, entretanto, o disciplinamento de comportamentos por meio do diálogo foi considerado importante. Os resultados destacam que a punição corporal utilizada no contexto familiar apresenta repercussões nos comportamentos agressivos desses adolescentes na escola.Palavras-chave: adolescência, punição corporal, práticas educativas.Abstract. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between corporal punishment in the family environment and behavioral problems in adolescents. Fifteen primary and secondary students aged 12 to 15 years old with aggressive behaviors at school participated in the study. The teenagers were interviewed about disciplinary practices used by their parents. The occurrence of corporal punishment was reported and the main reasons for this relate the lack of obedience to the involvement in situations of violence at school. Corporal punishment occurs by means of spanking, blows, and kicks which cause reactions of anger, sadness and fear as well as the understanding that their parents were stressed at the moment of the aggressive acts. Reports approving the use of corporal punishment in a moderate form were identifi ed, which highlight the intergenerational transmission of violence, however, the discipline of behaviors through dialogue was considered important. The results highlight that corporal punishment used in the family context presents repercussions in aggressive behaviors of adolescents in school.
