“…In this study, the adolescent sample was limited to individuals residing in the southeast region of China. Notably, the incidence of NSSI among this population was found to surpass that of previous literature (Esposito et al;Huang et al, 2022), this heightened occurrence of NSSI may be attributed to the exacerbation of anxiety and depression among adolescents in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic (Zhang et al, 2020). Future research should aim to investigate the generalizability of our findings across diverse temporal and geographical contexts.…”

“…The present study is not without limitations, and as such, there are several avenues for future research to explore. First, although the direction of effects we infer is in keeping up with both SDT and empirical research (Deci & Ryan, 2000;Huang et al, 2022;Thomassin et al, 2017), one limitation of the current study is that, due to its cross-sectional design, it is not possible to infer a causal relationship between the variables being examined. In order to enhance the robustness of the findings and address potential limitations, future research in this area should employ a longitudinal design to examine the potential mutual influence more comprehensively among the variables under investigation.…”

“…On the other hand, treatment could address the psychological characteristics that were identified in this study as correlates of NSSI severity. Individuals with high sensation seeking usually show impulsivity, and rashly engage in immediate modulatory behaviors (e.g., NSSI) to alter their negative emotions (Huang et al, 2022). The Real Understanding of Self-Help program (RUSH; Eccleston & Sorbello, 2002) has been shown to effectively reduce the intensity of prisoners' urges to self-harm.…”

“…Individuals with high sensation seeking are more likely than those with low sensation seeking to choose instantaneous forms of emotion regulation (e.g., NSSI) to generate sensations or stimulation (Knorr et al, 2013). Thus, considerable evidence suggests that sensation seeking is an important correlate of NSSI (e.g., Huang et al, 2022; Knorr et al, 2013). Furthermore, NSSI's function in setting interpersonal boundaries (social‐positive reinforcement) may also be particularly relevant in the prison setting.…”

“…Other negative experiences may be forms of punitive, aggressive, or manipulative behaviors directed at adolescents. These experiences include parents engaging in psychological control (Huang et al, 2022) or directing unregulated anger at the adolescent (Wang et al, 2016), which could disrupt parent-adolescent bonds, which is predictive of self-injury (Victor et al, 2019). In addition, being the victim of relational and physical/overt aggression from peers (Giletta et al, 2015) could trigger self-injury.…”
