The purpose of this study was to investigate patterns and factors related to 6- to 12-year-old children’s and their parents’ green space use behaviours in Çayyolu neighbourhood of Ankara, Turkey. Data were collected through draw and write surveys and questionnaire surveys at selected schools, and direct observations in eight parks in the neighbourhood. A total of 418 children and 383 of their parents participated in the surveys. In all, 498 recordings were made during on-site observations. Findings suggest that there is an interaction between park visiting patterns of parents and their children. Taking children to parks was a major motivation for – particularly female (p < 0.05) – parents to go outdoors. Most children (75%) used only gardens of their houses or housing complexes. There was a positive association between parents’ and children’s duration of visit (p = 0.00). Principal component analysis revealed three factors (52% of the total variance) effecting parents’ influence on their children’s use of green spaces; benefits of spending time outdoors, safety concerns and design characteristics. Results indicate that environmental design is not solely a factor in use of green spaces; understanding and promoting children’s use of green spaces should involve a holistic approach that includes social, cultural and physical aspects of the environment.

Rapid urbanization of China has brought lifestyle changes resulting in a continuous decline in children’s physical fitness (PF) and out-of-school physical activity (PA). To date, studies have been focused on correlates of PF and out-of-school PA, and patterns and trends based on geographic diversity and urban-rural contrasts. Western China, with a large rural population, has substantial urban-rural differences, but little work has been done to compare its children’s physical fitness (PF) and out-of-school physical activity (PA) at a county level. A total of 715 primary school students (grades 3–6) were surveyed from one urban school (n = 438) and four rural schools (n = 277) in a county-level administrative unit, Yangling District, Shaanxi, in western China. Physical fitness index (PFI) was measured and calculated based on the revised Chinese Student Physical Fitness Standards. Out-of-school PA and other variables of demographics, behavior and perception were collected using questionnaires. Statistical analyses explored urban-rural differences and correlates of PFI and out-of-school PA. We found that the PFI (72.86 vs. 79.67) and weekly moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) duration (167.57 vs. 220.08) of urban students were significantly lower than those of rural students. Weekly MVPA duration had the largest positive impact on PFI. Perceived availability of PA spaces was positively associated with both the urban and rural students’ PF and PA, while screen time was negatively associated with PF and PA, especially for rural students. Facilitators of PA frequency include the perceived availability of PA time and parental educational level. Parents’ PA habits had a positive impact on urban students’ PA. No association between active school commuting and PF or PA was found. Our findings revealed that PF and out-of-school PA of urban students were clearly lower than among rural students. The health of rural children at the county level in western China should be paid much more attention during the process of rapid urbanization.

Bu araştırma ebeveynlerin ders dışı sportif etkinlere yönelik tutumlarının belirlenmesini amaçlamaktadır. Ders dışı etkinlikler, isteğe bağlı, notsuz ve okul dışında yapılan çeşitli aktivitelerden oluşmaktadır. Bu aktivitelerin, katılım sağlayan çocukların akademik başarı düzeyleri ve sosyalleşme oranları üzerinde olumlu yönde etki oluşturduğu düşünülmektedir. Bu sebeple ebeveynlerin bu konudaki destek ve teşvikleri büyük öneme sahiptir. Bu araştırma, bilgi toplamak ve var olan bir durumu ortaya koymak amacıyla yapılan genel tarama modelindeki nicel bir araştırmadır. Araştırmanın örneklemini, Düzce Voleybol Gençlik ve Spor Kulübünde yer alan sporcuların ebeveynlerinden araştırmaya gönüllü katılım 100 ebeveyn oluşturmuştur. Veri toplama aracı olarak Yılmaz ve Güven (2015) tarafından geliştirilen Ders Dışı Sportif Etkinliklere Yönelik Ebeveyn Tutum Ölçeği ve katılımcıların kişisel bilgilerini içeren Kişisel Bilgi Formu kullanılmıştır. Analiz yöntemi olarak non-parametrik testlerden Mann Whitney U testi ve Kruskal Wallis H testleri kullanılmıştır. Elde edilen bulgular incelendiğinde, ebeveynlerin ders dışı sportif etkinliklere yönelik tutumlarının olumlu yönde olduğu anlaşılmıştır. Toplam tutum puanları ise, cinsiyet, yaş, eğitim düzeyi, çalışma durumu ve spor geçmişi değişkenlerine göre anlamlı farklılık göstermemektedir. İlgili literatür incelendiğinde, ebeveynlerin, ders dışı sportif etkinlere yönelik tutumları üzerine yapılan çalışmaların az sayıda olduğu ve bu sebeple çalışmanın literatüre katkı sağlayacağı düşünülmektedir. Araştırma sonucunda elde edilen bulgular, sportif etkinliklere ve ebeveyn tutumlarına yönelik bilgi vermesi açısından önem arz etmektedir
