“…Research across disciplines has investigated the effects of parental incarceration over the last several decades, finding that children of incarcerated parents display higher levels of substance use, internalizing and externalizing harmful behaviors, emotional and psychological instability, negative labor market outcomes, problems in school, and lower overall educational attainment (Arditti & Few, 2006; Haskins, Sørensen, & Soule, 2014; Murray, Loeber, & Pardini, 2012). Children of incarcerated parents also experience lower levels of family stability, increased challenges with physical and mental health, and higher levels of poverty compared to their peers (Kjellstrand, Yu, & Eddy, 2019; Wildeman & Muller, 2012). Additionally, parental incarceration is related to more adverse childhood outcomes than other types of parental separation (Murray & Farrington, 2005), drastically affecting the financial situation of families, and traumatizing children in the same way as abuse and domestic violence, and with the same lasting negative impacts (Annie E.
