Parental Contributions and Separation Anxiety on Adolescents’ Cannabis Use

Abstract: Among adolescents, cannabis use is perceived as a solution that reduces the intolerable feelings of SA disorder. If successful separation-individuation allows autonomy, the results indicate that cannabis use hides individuation problems. The use of this substance allows adolescents to express their personality and differentiate themselves from others through marginal behavior.

“…Furthermore, healthy adolescent autonomy can be considered a prevention factor for substance dependence [ 42 ], specifically cannabis [ 82 ], for the recurrence of depression symptoms [ 83 , 84 ], and in general for externalizing symptoms of mental disorders, as shown by the recent review [ 85 ]. It is also associated with other aspects of physical health, such as headache [ 86 ], adherence to treatment in patients with diabetes [ 87 ] or their resilient attitude toward health [ 88 ], and in general, commitment to the treatment of chronic diseases [ 84 ].…”

“…Cannabis use could also be understood in relation to the common difficulties among adolescents in the transition from adolescence to adulthood. In this vulnerable period the adolescents begin to develop abstract and differentiated selfconcepts (Steinberg & Morris, 2001), and some research suggest that cannabis use might alleviate intolerable feelings caused by individuation problems (Laguerre et al, 2015).…”

“…Generalized and social anxiety were both associated with cannabis-related problems (but not use) [50][51][52], with social anxiety also being associated with more problem severity [53] and generalized anxiety associated with use frequency (as opposed to endorsement of any use) [50,54]. Cannabis users were also more likely to endorse higher separation anxiety in adolescence compared to non-users [55]. Anxiety sensitivity was associated with cannabis-related problems [56] and more negative effects of cannabis [57].…”
