“…At stage 56 when limb regeneration capacity has virtually completely been lost, limb mesoderm is not capable of inducing an AEC with Fgf8 and Fgf10 expression in the ectoderm, also not in stage 51 ectoderm. In chickens limb mesoderm loses the capacity to induce an AER in flank ectoderm at HH stage 17 (Kieny 1968; Dhouailly and Kieny 1972; Saunders and Reuss 1974), whereas the capacity to regenerate the limb bud is lost somewhere between stages 15 and 18 (Cobb and Stephens 1999) and the capacity to regenerate the AER is lost at stage 17 or early 18 (Kieny 1968; Saunders and Reuss 1974). In urodeles, limb mesoderm continues to be able to induce an AEC after amputation throughout life.…”
