Parathyroid Hormone- and Deoxycorticosterone Acetate-Induced Hypertension in the Rat

Abstract: 1. Hypertension induced by treatment with deoxycorticosterone acetate and sodium chloride was studied in male Sprague-Dawley rats and related to parathyroid hormone secretion. 2. Lack of parathyroid hormone (due to parathyroidectomy) or decreased parathormone secretion (due to a high-calcium diet) partially inhibited the development of arterial hypertension. 3. In contrast, in thyroparathyroidectomized rats supplemented with thyroxine, the administration of parathyroid hormone rapidly elevated arterial blood p… Show more

“…We have thus confirmed previous results from this laboratory (Berthelot & Gairard, 1980). Reid, Zivin & Kopin (1975) and De Champlain, Farley, Cousineau & Van Ameringen (1976) found increased concentrations of serum catecholamines in DOCA-andsaline-induced hypertension.…”

“…Studies of the spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR) model of hypertension suggest that PTH is a factor in the development of hypertension. 32 ' 33 In this regard, parathyroidectomy can ameliorate the degree of blood pressure rise in SHR. 34 Other studies in the rat have indicated that PTH exerts a permissive role in the pressor effect of calcium infusion.…”

“…While a hypotensive effect of acute intravenous administration of PTH has been demonstrated in by guest on May 11, 2018 http://hyper.ahajournals.org/ Downloaded from both rats and dogs, chronic ablation of the parathyroid glands has been shown to attenuate experimental mineralocorticoid-induced hypertension. 48 In a recently reported study with SHR, we demonstrated that parathyroidectomy was associated with a significant attenuation in the rise in blood pressure in SHR, but had no effect on that of the WKY rat. 21 In summary, we have provided evidence of hyperparathyroidism in the SHR, having observed parathyroid hyperplasia and histological evidence of its effect on bone.…”
