Parathyroid adenoma: a case report

Abstract:
The incidence of primary hyperparathyroidism in India is 2.5/1000 individuals. Primary hyperparathyroidism can be caused by a non-cancerous parathyroid adenoma, hyperplasia or rarely by parathyroid carcinoma. Most of these patients have few or no symptoms. Correct diagnosis can be reached by clinical settings, biochemical and radiological tests and final confirmation by histopathology of the specimen.

“…Though the scans were more in a favour of PHPT. Modalities such as ultrasonography, 99m Tc-MIBI DPS, SPECT/CT have high diagnostic value in detecting PA. 90% sensitivity of MIBI scan is reported for detecting PA. 7 But has limited accuracy for hyperplasia (PH). Ultrasound has slightly better advantage for hyperplastic lesions.…”

“…Hyperparathyroidism, which develops when the usual feedback control by serum calcium is disrupted or there is an elevated production of PTH, has been mostly caused by parathyroid adenoma. 2 According to clinical investigations, individuals presenting with parathyroid tumor frequently have hypercalcemia. Ultrasonography and 99mTc-MIBI scintigraphy make parathyroid adenoma detection easier because of the rise in PTH levels and parathyroid function.…”

“…Imaging cannot detect normal parathyroid glands because they are too small, but parathyroid illness often causes the glands to grow and become visible. The main imaging modalities used to visualize diseased glands are sonography and 99mTc preoperative sestamibi (MIBI) scans 2.…”
