“…It is generally recognized that calcinosis in SSc occurs in the late stage. It has been reported that the appearance of spinal calcinosis was more common in patients with long‐term disease duration (mean, 9.09 years) . In our study, among the SSc patients with spinal calcinosis, the frequency of spinal calcinosis in the SSc patients in the late stage (disease duration, >10 years) was higher than in the SSc patients in the early stage (disease duration, ≤5 years).…”

“…However, the pathogenesis of spinal calcinosis in SSc is not well‐known. Ogawa et al . reported that Raynaud's phenomenon and digital ulcers were significantly prevalent in SSc patients with spinal calcinosis.…”

“…However, spinal and paraspinal calcifications, which cause serious neurologic complications, have been described in patients with SSc [12][13][14][15]. Furthermore, calcium hydroxyapatite deposition within the transverse ligament in SSc has been described in the literature [2].…”

“…Although subcutaneous and soft tissue calcinosis are common in SSc, spinal calcinosis is not well recognized. [1][2][3][4][5] It is suggested that tissue hypoxia due to vasculopathy may be associated with the pathogenesis of calcinosis in SSc, but not well elucidated. Reports of intraspinal calcinosis in patients with SSc are still limited.…”

“…[3][4][5] Sambataro et al 4 summarized 35 previously described cases of tumoral calcinosis in paravertebral areas in SSc patients, and determined that tumoral calcinosis of the spine is more frequent in dcSSc than in localized SSc, and that 54.3% of SSc patients with calcinosis of the spine (19/35) suffered from neurological symptoms due to spinal cord compression, such as pain, numbness, weakness and paralysis of extremities. Ogawa et al 5 reported that paraspinal calcinosis located in the thoracic spine was found in 24 out of 41 SSc patients (58.5%), of whom 12 patients (29.3%) showed intraspinal calcinosis simultaneously. In addition, they reported that Raynaud's phenomenon, digital ulcers and calcinosis cutis were significantly prevalent in SSc patients with spinal calcinosis.…”
