Parasitic nematodes—From genomes to control

Abstract: The diseases caused by parasitic nematodes in domestic and companion animals are major factors that decrease production and quality of the agricultural products. Methods available for the control of the parasitic nematode infections are mainly based on chemical treatment, non-chemical management practices, immune modulation and biological control. However, even with integrated pest management that frequently combines these approaches, the effective and long-lasting control strategies are hampered by the persis… Show more

“…Different aspects in host-parasite relationships have benefited from genomic approaches in other parasitic nematodes including the entomopathogenic nematode Heterorhabditis bacteriophora [1820], however, very little is known about the genomics of S. carpocapsae . In this work we constructed a cDNA library with transcripts from the parasitic phase of the nematode and we sequenced and analyzed 2500 ESTs that resulted in the identification of a set of genes that are putatively involved in parasitic mechanisms.…”

“…Si comparamos esta situación con la de los nematodos parásitos, solamente nueve de ellos han sido completamente secuenciados (76) . C. elegans va muy adelantado puesto que también su transcriptoma está completamente descrito y disponible (www.nematodes.org).…”

“…For this release of Nematode.net, we have added gene annotations for Trichinella spiralis (17). As the PNGP (18,19) progresses and new genome resources are made available, we plan to add them into the NemaBrowse, along with Rfam predictions, NemaSNP variants and gene-calling evidence as analysis becomes available. The end goal would be to include the final assembly and annotation in WormBase (11) as it is a resource that has already started hosting non- Caenorhabditis species, however the completion of a genome project is a lengthy process (even when next-generation sequence data is used), therefore an immediate release of the interim products enables use of the data by the research community as soon as they are generated.…”
