Parasitic hazard with sewage sludge applied to land

Abstract: A modification of the FAUST technique allowed a highly regular recovery of Taenia saginata eggs from sewage sludge, as well as their quantification. Despite the low viability (8%) noted, the viable T. saginata egg level remains high (20 106/ha) and offers a serious risk for cattle even after a 3-week "no-grazing" period.

“…cannot be distinguished on appearance (Scandrett and Gajadhar, 2004;Gajadhar et al, 2006;Huerta et al, 2008), molecular methods are available which have been utilised primarily for the diagnosis of Taeniosis, though there is potential that they could be utilised for environmental detection and allow for speciation of the eggs (González et al, 2000). Faust triple flotation technique with ZnSo4.7H20 (728g) plus deionised water to a volume of 1,000ml, sp.G of 1.38 (Barbier et al, 1990) had a mean recovery efficacy (E) of 35% (95% C.I. 25.2 to 42.8) (Barbier et al, 1990).…”

“…It may include testing of the water supplies as contaminated water was reported as the source of some outbreaks of T. saginata (Lees et al, 2002;Kyvsgaard et al, 1991a). Cabaret and colleagues (2002) reviewed the methods for detecting helminth eggs in waste water and sludge and found that most have low recovery efficiency for Taenia eggs ranging from 19-48% with the triple flotation technique yielding the best results (Barbier et al, 1989/ Barbier et al, 1990Faust et al, 1938.…”
