“…As our analysis focused on small sized fractions (< 150 μm), this novel diversity may correspond at least partly to not yet described microsporidian species infecting small hosts. Some studies report infections of ciliates and rotifers by Microsporidia in freshwater environments (Fokin et al ., 2008; Wolska and Mazurkiewicz‐Zapalowicz, 2013; Stentiford et al ., 2013a; Yakovleva et al ., 2020), but only two sequences from ciliates, and none from rotifers are currently available in the databases. Further sampling efforts aiming to identify host‐microsporidian interactions in these small size organisms will be necessary in order to confirm this hypothesis.…”

“…In freshwaters, only a few observations showed Microsporidia parasiting ciliates with only two microsporidian species characterized by morphological and molecular approaches (Euplotespora binucleata and Globosporidium paramecii parasitizing the ciliates Euplotes woodruffi and Paramecium aurelia, respectively [6,7]). Among microzooplankton, Microsporidia have been observed in the rotifers Brachionus calicyflorus as well as in Asplanchna priodonta and A. brightwellii in both river and freshwater lakes [8,9] however these observations (no molecular data) remain sporadic and for most at low prevalence.…”

“…Brachionus calyciflorus by Microsporidium sp. on 1.2% of the host population, [9]). However, these descriptions were only morphological and neither the site of infection nor the microsporidian spore or intracellular form were described.…”

“…1, C). Previously Saprolegnia fungi were found in the body cavity of Cladocera C. sphaericus (Wolska & Mazurkiewicz-Zapalowicz, 2013). Olpidium gregarium Schroter, 1886 belongs to holocarpic fungi which parasitize mainly the freshwater algae, mosses, fl owering plants and microscopic animals such as rotifers (Mierinho et al, 2013).…”

“…Such Ukrainian scientists as V. I. Monchenko, I. V. Dovgal and Y. G. Boshko signifi cantly contributed to the study of obligate epibionts of zooplankton (Dovgal, 1984;Dovgal, 1988Dovgal, , 2013Monchenko, 2003;. Foreign studies of zooplankton symbionts are very few, and mainly focus on the taxonomy and biology of certain species of hosts and symbionts (Evans et al, 1979;Gaiser & Bachmann, 1993;Carman & Dobbs, 1997;Fernandes-Leborans & Tato-Porto, 2000;Barea-Arco et al, 2001;Bittner et al, 2002;Duncan et al, 2009;Lohr et al, 2010;Bickel et al, 2012;Wolska & Mazurkiewicz-Zapalowicz, 2013;Bielecka & Boehnke, 2014;and others).…”
