“…Moreover, since MLR/MET values were >1.2 µm µm -1 throughout the studied period, it seems that mussels were subjected to some source of environmental stress (Cajaraville et al 1992. Histopathological alterations are useful to assess the general health status of sentinel molluscs and hence ecosystem health (Kim et al 1998). Mussels commonly harbour parasites and diseases of a variety of types that can significantly affect their health and fecundity (Pérez Camacho et al 1997).…”

“…The Ulrich et al (2007) study did not include histological confirmation of the PCR results, whereas the negative results that we found in our PCR assay were consistent with those from histological examination of the same oysters, as well as previous histological surveys of Crassostrea virginica in the Gulf of Mexico, including the annual Mussel Watch analyses that began in 1995. Since at least 1978, several thousand oysters have been examined histologically without finding any recognizable haplosporidian (Couch 1985, Gauthier et al 1990, Fisher et al 1996, Kim et al 1998, Fisher et al 2000, Winstead et al 2004, Kim & Powell 2006. In addition, at least one other study has examined Gulf of Mexico oysters using both PCR and histology.…”

The most comprehensive of these is the annual status and trends (S&T) …”

“…From a previous Mussel Watch Program by the EPA, Yevich and Barszcz (1983) reported correlations between locations with high parasitism and locations high in PCBs. Kim et al (1998) also reported that trematode sporocysts in M. edulis were positively correlated with body burdens of total PCBs. Evidence to support these observations from this study includes the fact that total PCB levels in mytilids were positively associated with infections by trematode sporocysts.…”

“…Negative correlations occurred with mirex for the mytilids and with a variety of pesticides and the PCBs in oysters. A negative correlation between cestodes from East-coast oysters with total hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH), a synthetic pesticide that does not occur naturally in the environment, was identi ed by Kim et al (1998). In this study, all potential relationships of cestodes in oysters with manufactured organic chemicals (i.e.…”
