This paper provides both the results of a comprehensive research study on trichodinid parasites of several fish species and a review of current trichodinid fauna of fish species revealed during parasitological survey studies in Turkey. The present study yielded 1 Tripartiella, 1 Paratrichodina, and 8 Trichodina identified to the species level and 3 Trichodina identified to the generic level in 12 fish species belonging to several families; their host preferences and infestation indices have also been presented. As a result of fish parasite investigations, a total of 33 trichodinid species have been identified on 30 fish species in Turkey. Considering the total number of 850 marine and freshwater fish species present in the Turkish fauna, the present data on the trichodinid fauna of fishes in the Lower Kızılırmak Delta and the literature studies conducted so far clearly point out the necessity of conducting more investigations on unexamined fish species to attain a more complete picture throughout all Turkish waters. The bioindicator potential of trichodinid parasites will also provide clues for the current status of aquatic environments.

This comprehensive research study was conducted to determine the monogenean fauna of 16 fish species belonging to Cyprinidae, Mugilidae, Gobiidae, Percidae, Cyprinodontidae, Gasterosteidae, Cobitidae, Atherinidae, Poecilidae and Sygnidae in Lower Kızılırmak Delta located by the coasts of the Black Sea in the northern part of Turkey. A total of 1049 fish specimens were collected during the period between December 2010 and November 2011. Gyrodactylus proterorhini, G. cyprini, G. arcuatus, Dactylogyrus extensus, D. chalcalburni, D. difformis, Ancyrocephalus paradoxus, Ligophorus mediterraneus, L. cephali, Solostamenides mugilis and Paradiplozoan homoion were identified to the specific level while oneGyrodactylus and one Salsuginus species were identified only to the generic level. Some monogeneans were found to be specific to some host families, especially Ligophorus for Mugilidae and Dactylogyrus for Cyprinidae. Prevalence (%) and intensity indices were determined and discussed for each monogenean species and/or genus on respective hosts. All the monogenean species were recorded for the first time in the Lower Kızılırmak Delta. Gyrodactylus cyprini and Ancyrocephalus paradoxus represented new parasite records for Turkey.

Histozoic parasite–fish host interaction is a dynamic process that leads to the formation of a granuloma, a specific chronic inflammatory response with discernible histological features. Mullets (Osteichthyes: Mugilidae) represent a suitable model concerning the development of such lesions in the host–parasite interface. The present work aimed to identify granuloma developmental stages from the early to the late phase of the infection and to characterize the immune cells and non-inflammatory components of the granuloma in different stages. For this purpose, 239 mullets were collected from 4 Sardinian lagoons, and several organs were examined by combining histopathological, bacteriological, and immunohistochemical methods. Granulomas associated with trematode metacercariae and myxozoan parasites were classified into three developmental stages: (1) pre-granuloma stage, characterized by intact encysted parasite and with no or mild tissue reaction; (2) intermediate stage, with partially degenerated parasites, necrosis, and a moderate number of epithelioid cells (ECs); and (3) late stage, with a necrotic core and no detectable parasite with a high number of ECs and fibroblasts. The three-tier staging and the proposed morphological diagnosis make it conceivable that histopathology could be an essential tool to evaluate the granulomas associated with histozoic parasitic infection in fish.
