Parasite faecal egg counts in equine veterinary practice

Abstract: Summary Widespread occurrence of anthelmintic resistance in ascarid and strongylid parasites has led to recommendations of routine treatment efficacy screening with the faecal egg count reduction test. Furthermore, faecal egg counts are used for classifying mature horses into low, moderate and high strongylid egg shedders, and to monitor for ascarids in foals, weanlings and yearlings. The plethora of egg counting techniques is surrounded by confusion and misconception regarding their use, diagnostic performanc… Show more

“…FECs were measured as a proxy for patent cyathostomin infection. 123 FEC was carried out using a modified McMaster technique 124 on 5 g of faeces diluted in 70 mL of NaCl solution with a density of 1.2 (sensitivity of 50 eggs/g). Immediately after homogenising, 0.5 mL aliquots of the solution were added to both chambers of a McMaster slide.…”

“…Una vez obtenidas las heces de los 10 potros y potrancas, fueron procesadas en el laboratorio del rancho a través de la técnica de McMaster modificada (Zajac y Conboy, 2012), para obtener el número de huevos por gramo de heces (HPG) y así establecer la carga parasitaria de los animales (Nielsen, 2021).…”

“…2 Extensive resistance to benzimidazole (BZM) and pyrimidine products has been reported in cyathostomin parasites, with recent evidence suggesting additional resistance to macrocyclic lactones (MLs). 3 Conversely, ascarids, such as Parascaris equorum, show widespread resistance to MLs but also latterly some evidence of resistance to BZM and pyrimidine products. 3 With dual-and cross-resistance also being detected, 4 it is now clear that with the waning efficacy of anthelmintics as a result of global resistance and no new products on the horizon, the ability to control parasites in grazing species is in jeopardy.…”

Accordingly, it is vital that action is taken to preserve the remaining efficacy of available anthelmintics, while also exploring more sustainable, chemical-free methods of parasite control.…”
