Parasite Communities of Icefish (Chionodraco hamatus) in the Ross Sea (Antarctica): Influence of the Host Sex on the Helminth Infracommunity Structure

Abstract: Parasite communities of Chionodraco hamatus were investigated from Terra Nova Bay (Ross Sea, Antarctica) during host spawning time. Special attention was given to helminth infracommunities and effect of host sex on its structure. A total of 21 taxa including 5 ecto-parasites and 16 endo-parasites were identified. The number of ecto and endo-parasite species per individual host ranged from 1 to 3 and 3 to 10, respectively, while the mean numbers of parasite specimens per individual host were 4.7 and 1309.7, res… Show more

“…4. Physiological, morphological and behavioural gender differences between hosts have been pointed out as possible reasons for dissimilarities of parasite abundance (Poulin, 1996;Šimková et al, 2005;Santoro et al, 2014). Females of P. brasiliensis grow faster and reach greater lengths than males of the same age due, probably, to an asynchronism in the sexual maturity (Barretto et al, 2011).…”

“…The skin, musculature, gills, mouth cavity, digestive tract, liver, heart, gonads, visceral cavity and mesenteries of each fresh individual fish were examined under a dissecting microscope for parasites. For each organ, ecto-and endo-parasites were collected, counted, washed in physiological saline solution, and preserved in 70% ethanol 21 . For identification, crustaceans and nematodes were clarified in 20% potassium hydroxide and Amman's lactophenol respectively, and then returned to 70% ethanol, trematodes were stained with Mayer's acid carmine and mounted in Canada balsam.…”

“…obs. ;Santoro et al, 2014), whereas only low worm burdens were commonly found in Arctic boreal pinnipeds and fish (Mattiucci and Nascetti, 2007). A statistically significant correlation was observed between the abundance of the infection (A) as a measure of effective population size of parasite (N) and the value of genetic diversity (mean He) (Fig.…”
