Parascaris spp. eggs in horses of Italy: a large-scale epidemiological analysis of the egg excretion and conditioning factors

Abstract: Background Equine ascariosis, caused by Parascaris spp., is a worldwide endoparasitic disease affecting young horses in particular. Despite the great number of horses reared in Italy, large-scale epidemiological surveys dealing with ascariosis prevalence in the country are not reported in the current literature. For this reason, the present survey aims to describe, for the first time, the spread and infestation of Parascaris spp. in a large population of Italian horses (6896 animals) using faec… Show more

“…This finding correlated with other reports, e.g. from Burkina Faso, 50 Poland, 13 Ethiopia, 14 Cameroon 25 and Canada, 21 in which Parascaris was present also in older equids. In the studies from Africa and Canada, this was assumed to be due to compromised immunity associated with suboptimal nutritional status.…”

“…8 However, the relevance of older horses harbouring ascarids as a significant source of infection for young animals has also been described. 50 Accordingly, in our study, pack horses up to 12 years of age were positive for Parascaris sp. This finding correlated with other reports, e.g.…”

“…Infected animals with P. equorum may develop some respiratory symptoms, ill thrift accompanied by rough hair coat and bouts of diarrhea or colic (Studzińska, et al, 2020). Moreover, severe infestations of adult P. equorum can cause small intestine rupture and death (Scala, et al, 2021). Traditional control strategies mainly rely on three major drug classes: benzimidazoles (BZ), the tetrahydropyrimidine pyrantel (PYR) and macrocyclic lactones (ML) (Samson-Himmelstjerna, 2012).…”

“…In horses, ascarid eggs are excreted mainly by foals and yearlings (<1.4 years old) (Hautala et al, 2019;Scala et al, 2021), whereas in donkeys a high prevalence of Parascaris spp. can be seen regardless of the age of the animals (Getachew et al, 2008b(Getachew et al, , 2010.…”
