The objective of this study was to characterize Nelore cattle on central performance tests in pasture, ranked by the visual classification method EPMURAS (structure, precocity, muscle, navel, breed, posture, and sexual characteristics), and to estimate genetic and phenotypic correlations between these parameters, including visual as well as production traits (initial and final weight on test, weight gain, and weight corrected for 550 days). The information used in the study was obtained on 21,032 Nelore bulls which were participants in the central performance test at pasture of the Brazilian Association for Zebu Breeders (ABCZ). Heritabilities obtained were from 0.19 to 0.50. Phenotypic correlations were positive from 0.70 to 0.97 between the weight traits, from 0.65 to 0.74 between visual characteristics, and from 0.29 to 0.47 between visual characteristics and weight traits. The genetic correlations were positive ranging from 0.80 to 0.98 between the characteristics of structure, precocity and musculature, from 0.13 to 0.64 between the growth characteristics, and from 0.41 to 0.97 between visual scores and weight gains. Heritability and genetic correlations indicate that the use of visual scores, along with the selection for growth characteristics, can bring positive results in selection of beef cattle for rearing on pasture.

Random regression models (RRM) differ in terms of the functions used to describe the shape of lactation curves. The aim was to compare random regression models under different functions to describe the lactation curves from Holstein cows in herds of the state of Minas Gerais. A database of 28,118 production records was analyzed using the test-day records of 4,230 first parity cows from five herds. The Wilmink, Ali & Schaeffer and Legendre polynomial (orders 4, 5 and 6) functions were adjusted in RRM to model the mean production trend (fixed) and genetic and permanent environmental (random) effects. The residual variances were assumed to be constant throughout lactation. Analyses were performed using the AIREMLF90 program. Except for the model with the polynomial function of order 5, all models converged. The Wilmink function showed lower values for criteria based on the -2log (L), AIC and BIC. The model with the Legendre polynomial of order 6 showed lower residual variance. Heritability estimates were similar between functions, ranging from 0.07 to 0.18 and were higher from 215 days of lactation. From 155 days of lactation, genetic and permanent environmental correlations between successive controls are of high magnitude. The Wilmink function is the most suitable for the study of milk yields from primiparous Holstein cows. The selection of animals is possible from 155 days of lactation on. Permanent environmental effects have greater influence on the milk production at the end of lactation of primiparous cows and should be considered since they are important and may be cumulative throughout lactation.

Context.Reproduction is an economically important trait in both males and females; however, the relationships between fertility and body composition traits are little researched, but essential to breeding programs, as they will help inform selection decisions and allow the greatest opportunity for genetic gain. Aims. Estimate genetic and phenotypic correlations between male and female yearling fertility traits and investigate their relationship with yearling body composition traits, which have an effect on the attainment of puberty. Methods. Genotype and phenotype data were obtained from a tropical composite commercial cattle population and imputed to 27 638 single nucleotide polymorphisms. A series of univariate and bivariate linear mixed models using a genomic relationship matrix were run to estimate genetic parameters, genetic and phenotypic correlations for a series of male and female fertility and body composition traits. These parameters were then compared to help understand the genetic relationships. Key results. Scrotal circumference was favourably genetically correlated with weight (0.34), fat traits (0.06-0.24), muscle (0.24) and heifer days to calving (−0.32). Heifer days to calving was favourably correlated with muscle (−0.18) but not fat traits (0.11 to 0.21). The genetic correlations between heifer days to calving and sperm morphology traits were generally unfavourable (−0.32 to 0.25). Sperm morphology traits were favourably genetically correlated with fat traits (−0.84 to 0.31) and muscle (−0.61 to 0.31) but not weight (−0.15 to 0.09). Conclusions and implications. Yearling sperm morphology traits were unfavourably correlated with heifer days to calving, indicating that they are not good candidates for indirect selection on improving female fertility in the herd. A different trend was found for yearling scrotal circumference and heifer days to calving, identifying it as a good candidate for indirect selection of heifer fertility as it is easy to measure and heritable. The genetic correlations estimated between composition traits with male and female fertility traits allow breeding programs to make an informed selection decision to optimise genetic gain across all traits.
