The tambaqui Colossoma macropomum is the main species of edible fish originating from fish farming in the Amazon region. This study aimed to determine and compare the hematological and biochemical parameters of tambaqui from fish farms in municipalities in the Metropolitan Region of Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil. Two fish farms were sampled in a semi-excavated pond-type breeding system in each of the five towns investigated (Presidente Figueiredo, Manaus, Iranduba, Manacapuru and Novo Airão), totaling ten breeders. On each farm, ten specimens were captured, totaling 100 animals. Blood was collected by caudal puncture, and hematological and biochemical parameters were determined using the methodology described for teleosts fish. For the erythrogram in the variables of hematocrit, hemoglobin concentration and erythrocytes, significant differences were observed in Iranduba and Novo Airão, demonstrating indications of anemic processes and dehydration. For plasma biochemistry, low levels were observed in fish from Iranduba and Novo Airão. High values in lipid compounds were found in tambaqui from Manacapuru. High intraspecific variation was found in the leukogram and thrombogram, which determined similarities between tambaqui from different farms and municipalities. On the other hand, fish from Manacapuru have an inappropriate diet, indicated by the high levels of cholesterol and triglycerides found in the blood.

Hematological Parameters of the Hybrid Serrasalmids Farmed in Central-Western Brazil

This study evaluated the hematological parameters of tambacu and patinga, two the hybrid serrasalmid fishes farmed in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, with emphasis on the influence of seasons on them. Two-hundred forty hybrid fishes, 120 tambacus and 120 patingas, were collected over 12 months to assess their hematological parameters and compare them between the warm (October-March) and cold seasons (April-September). Water quality parameters were also measured weekly to test for the influence of environmental conditions on the results. The dissolved oxygen content in the water decreased in the warm season, and increased in the cold season. In the warm season, tambacus presented significantly higher values (p<0.05) of the total plasmatic protein (TPP), hemoglobin, mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), and eosinophil count parameters. In the cold season, counts of erythrocytes, thrombocytes, total leukocytes, lymphocytes, and neutrophils were higher in tambacus (p<0.05). For patinga, MCV was higher in the warm season, while hemoglobin, erythrocytes, MCHC, total leukocytes, and basophil counts were higher (p<0.05) in the cold season. These results demonstrated the influences of seasonality on the hematological parameters of the hybrids tambacu and patinga when held under normal farming conditions in the region. PARÂMETROS HEMATOLÓGICOS DE SERRASALMÍDEOS HÍBRIDOSCULTIVADOS NA REGIÃO CENTRO-OESTE DO BRASIL RESUMO Este estudo avaliou os parâmetros hematológicos de híbridos tambacu e patinga cultivados no Mato Grosso do Sul, Brasil, com ênfase na influência das épocas do ano. Duzentos e quarenta peixes híbridos, 120 tambacus e 120 patingas, foram coletados ao longo de 12 meses para análises hematológicas, comparando a estação quente (Outubro-Março) com a estação fria (Abril-Setembro). Os parâmetros de qualidade de água foram medidos semanalmente, para verificar sua influência sobre os parâmetros hematológicos. A estação quente mostrou tendência ao declínio nos níveis de oxigênio dissolvido, enquanto na estação fria ocorreu o inverso. Na estação quente, tambacus apresentaram valores mais altos (p<0,05) de proteína plasmática total (TPP), concentração de hemoglobina, volume corpuscular médio (MCV), concentração de hemoglobina corpuscular média (MCHC) e número de eosinófilos. Na estação fria, as contagens de eritrócitos, trombócitos, leucócitos totais, linfócitos e neutrófilos foram mais altas (p<0,05). Em patingas, valores mais altos de MCV foram observados na estação quente, enquanto a concentração de hemoglobina, eritrócitos, MCHC, leucócitos totais e basófilos foram mais altos (p<0,05) na estação fria. Os resultados mostram influência da sazonalidade sobre os parâmetros hematológicos dos híbridos tambacu e patinga mantidos em condições típicas de cultivo na região.

This study assessed the effectiveness of three anticoagulants in blood parameters of "cururu" stingrays Potamotrygon cf. histrix. Blood from ten individuals were collected and diluted with anticoagulants EDTA 5% and 10%, heparin 2500 and 5000 UI and sodium citrate 3.2%. A blood sample without anticoagulant was also evaluated. The blood of samples without anticoagulant and with sodium citrate 3.2% coagulated in 20% and 30% of the cases, respectively. Clumps of cells were observed during erythrocyte counting in 30% of samples with EDTA 10%, 40% of samples with heparin 2500 IU and 60% of samples with heparin 5000 IU. No alterations were observed on the erythrogram of "cururu" stingrays with different anticoagulants, the values of plasma glucose were similar in all groups and total protein levels were lower in the samples with EDTA 5% and 10%. The use of sodium citrate 3.2% is not recommended for blood sample conservation of Potamotrygon cf. histrix. stingrays, but anticoagulants did not affect the parameters analyzed in the determination of plasma glucose and erythrogram. Therefore, these results indicate that in order to blood coagulation the samples should be collected directly with any of these anticoagulants concentrations.
