Parametric Study of Experimental and Numerical Simulation of Sandwich Composite Structures Flexural Behaviour

Abstract: Sandwich panels with composite/steel skin sheets and foam core are very often used as lightweight structures in automotive, maritime and aerospace applications due to their performances like high bending stiffness and strength and also lightweight. As an alternative to classical structural reinforced panels, the sandwich structures are justifying their use in various industrial fields, making these structures less complex, by eliminating the need for secondary stiffening. In the paper are presented three model… Show more

“…The faces and the core are glued with an adhesive aimed to facilitate mechanical and thermal load transfer between components. This increases the bending stiffness of the structure without adding substantial weight, despite the heterogeneity of the component materials and the totally different properties of the core and skins [8]. The behavior to bending loading of sandwich (composite-polystyrene-composite) specimens, by 3 point bending method is analysed.…”

“…The loss in stiffness of this types of core changes the overall mechanical response of the panel sandwich structure [10][11]. This change in panel behaviour has to be considered in the design procedures, because it may lead to a significant change in the failure mode of the structure [12][13].…”

“…Polymer composites materials constitute a very active area for research in material science and nondestructive evaluation. The composites hold improved properties based on the advanced features of each individual component, sustaining new industrial applications which cannot be obtained based on individual components performances [1][2][3]. It is well known that the thermal and mechanical behavior of polymers is strongly influenced by factors such type, size, content and shape of the fillers [1][2][3].…”

It is well known that the thermal and mechanical behavior of polymers is strongly influenced by factors such type, size, content and shape of the fillers [1][2][3]. Furthermore, these properties have a very complex dependence on the chemical structure and the crosslink density when thermoset resins and metallic fillers are combined [4,5].…”
