Parameters for positive outcome of the in-hospital rehabilitation of spinal cord lesion patients: the Boberg Quality Score

Abstract: Study design: Monocentric Cohort Study. Objective: Development of a multi-dimensional outcome score of the rehabilitation of spinal cord injury (SCI) patients. Setting: Level 1 Trauma centre with large spinal unit. Methods: During the rehabilitation of 161 patients with SCI between 2005 and 2007 following outcome parameters were assessed at different time points: functional status, pain, emotion, energy, sleep, social isolation, knowledge and self-management attitude. The results for these parameters were stat… Show more

“…Patients with paraplegia reached a mean score level of 69 points after 12 weeks that rose up to 71 points after 48 weeks. In a study by Thietje et al, 13 comparable values were report after 12 weeks with rehabilitation, whereas the time of discharge was not well defined. However, Thietje et al did not differ between tetraplegic and paraplegia in the outcome scores.…”

“…However, there was no significant difference between these parameters. Contrary to this, the study of Thietje et al 13 showed that age, sex and social isolation have no influence on the outcome regarding functional status. They found the results of functional status mainly influenced by the self-management attitude, next to the type of spinal injury.…”

“…[3][4][5][6][7] Our previous study showed that the combination of functional, psychological and cognitive parameters made it possible to determine the quality of a rehabilitation process in multiple dimensions. 8,9 However, an adequate scale to measure knowledge about SCI and SCI-related complications is missing.…”
