Parameters for antimicrobial photodynamic therapy on periodontal pocket—Randomized clinical trial

Abstract: Background: Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) has been investigated as adjunctive to periodontal treatment and the dosimetry parameters adopted have discrepancies and represent a challenge to measure its efficacy. There is a need to understand the clinical parameters required to obtain antimicrobial effects by using aPDT in periodontal pockets. The aim of this study was thus to investigate the parameters relating to the antimicrobial effects of photodynamic therapy in periodontal pockets.

“…Alvarenga et al, also reported that APDT used as an adjuvant treatment showed effective short-term control of periodontitis infection. These results may have occurred due to the periodontal pockets having a clinical probing depth of 5 to 6 mm, being relatively shallow and thus presenting more oxygen in the subgingival portion (14,(19)(20)(21)(22) APDT appears to be a promising option for reducing the amount of periodontopathogenic microorganisms in combination with conventional therapy.…”

“…Previous studies showed that SDS with APDT on periodontal bacteria produced a significant bacterial reduction. However, more studies are necessary to elucidate the effect of the SDS component on bacterial inactivation (14). This study aims to compare the action of antimicrobial photodynamic chemotherapy using the photosensitizer in SDS and PBS, quantifying the microbial death of A. actinomycetemcomitans and P. gingivalis.…”

“…Based on a selection of recent publications in which the authors have reported the parameters and settings used to deliver an effective treatment in sufficient detail to allow anyone to repeat the treatment with any laser or LED device [55,85,93,94,95,96,97], the suggested protocol of PDT with λ 635 nm light source for supportive periodontal treatment is summarized in Table 4.…”

“…These biological communities are embedded in polymeric matrixes produced by the cells becoming most of the time recalcitrant to antimicrobial treatment. Microbial biofilms are responsible for most of the infections in humans (2), and aPDT has been successfully used to treat different biofilm-related infections (3)(4)(5)(6).…”
