Parameterized Geometric Design for Complex Helical Drill Point

Abstract: This paper presents the design method for complex helical drill point. Different from the conventional helical drill point generated by simultaneous rotation and translation of the drill blank, the complex helical drill point is ground by a supplementary swinging. Associated with these movements a series of grinding parameters are defined. There is another set of structural parameters, characteristic values (chisel angle, point angle, and clearance angle) manifesting the behavioral requirements of a drill. Rel… Show more

“…One of the solutions can be precise parameterized geometric design of generic profile form milling cutter. As reported in the literature, lot of work has been done related to the geometric design of single point [6], [7], [10] and multi-point [2], [16] cutting tools but information concerned with the geometric design of generic profile form milling cutter is scarce. Some work, related to development of a mathematical model of form cutting tools, has been done by Hsieh and Tsai [3], Radzevich [9] and Wang et al [15].…”

“…This method is advantageous in reasonable distribution of flank, favorable in heat dissipation, and relatively high in strength. Its major defect is an elongated chisel edge and unfavorable clearance angle distribution, making serious wear on the flank [3,4,5,6,7].…”
