Insider Perspectives on Saudi Arabia’s Fakher Disability Sports Programme

In recent years, Saudi Arabia has made many efforts to support people with disabilities. One of these efforts is the Fakher Programme Initiative. The programme provides substantial financial support and training for around 350 para-athletes with physical disabilities or cerebral palsy. This research sought to provide a thick description of the programme’s aims, its successes, and the challenges faced, based on the reports of significant stakeholders. In-depth interviews with 26 participants from different stakeholder groups (para-athletes, coaches, administrators, para-athlete families, individuals interested in para-sports, and the CEO of the Fakher Programme) were conducted individually to provide rich insider perspectives. An interpretive phenomenological analysis approach was applied to analyse the interviews. Two main dimensions were identified: (i) the positive impacts of the Fakher Programme Initiative and (ii) further recommended improvements to the Fakher Programme Initiative. Although most of the participants expressed positive perspectives on the programme (e.g., developing collaboration, health benefits, infrastructural support, and raising awareness of people with disabilities), improvements can be made in the form of psychological support for elite para-athletes in training and more developed national and international media coverage of disability sports in Saudi Arabia.

ObjectivesPara sport has much to teach the broader sports world about safeguarding and athlete protections. By centering athletes’ human rights and underlining the rights-based philosophical underpinnings of the Paralympic Movement, we outline how sport can be safer to all players, coaches, and other participants.MethodsWe address global Human Rights conventions and their application to Para and non-disabled sport. Safe Sport is positioned as a matter of human rights. The nature of interpersonal violence that human beings experience within and outside sport is discussed. The intersectionality of vulnerable identities (related to gender, sexuality, disability, ethnicity, etc.) is reviewed in some detail.ResultsRights violations in Para and non-disabled sport illustrate both individual and organizational vulnerabilities. Individual- and organizational-level drivers of abuse, as well as various modes and types of abuse observed in Para sport, are relevant in all sport settings and should be centered in global sport safeguarding work. The rights-based core of Para and similar sports movements, exemplifies this.ConclusionFrom a Para-informed vantage point, we issue a call to action, where interpersonal violence in sport is reduced by leveraging relevant elements of the Paralympic Movement. This call asks all sport participants to reject a purely capitalist approach to sport and follow a Para sport paradigm; which embodies human achievement (including sporting success), reflects human rights and inherent human dignity, and requires a higher standard of behaviour.

Introduction: Wheelchair tennis (WT) players are prone to developing shoulder and upper-limb injuries due to the combination of wheelchair propulsion, overhead activities, and training loads. Despite these characteristics, little is known about possible associations between reported pain and injuries and the psychological health perceptions of experienced athletes. The objective of this study was to verify the existence of correlations between pain in the upper limbs (UL) with psychobiological aspects after the return to activity following the confinement period of the COVID-19 pandemic.Material and methods: 18 WT athletes (16 males and 2 females; age: 31.2 ± 10.4; weight: 65.8 ± 16.8; height: 160 ± 30; BMI: 29.6 ± 21.5) participated in the study. For data collection, five instruments were used: (1) the Disabilities of the Arm Shoulder and Hand questionnaire, (2) the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire, (3) the Athlete Burnout Questionnaire, (4) the Generalized Anxiety Disorder questionnaire and, (5) the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Data were analyzed by correlation and simple linear regressions. We adopted p < 0.05 as the significance threshold.Results: No significant correlations were found between pain in the upper limbs and psychobiological aspects. However, the dimension of physical and emotional exhaustion correlated with anxiety (R² = 0.257; p = 0.032) and devaluation in sport was associated with poor sleep quality (R² = 0.324; p = 0.014).Conclusions: Although there are no correlations between pain in the upper limbs and psychobiological strain, mental aspects influence each other.
