Digitally Augmenting Traditional Craft Practices for Social Justice

In this chapter, I continue the thread of discussion focusing specifically on the relationships between quilting and research. First, I build an understanding of what I perceive to be meaningful action and design processes, building on work that addresses the use of digital technologies in charities and other third sector services. Then, I think through how working towards more just worlds in this space can also relate to the development of a shared praxis of hope where we are able to better care for ourselves, one another, and our planet. After this reflexive writing on theory, I start to bring in examples from the crafting process involved in making The Partnership Quilt-about the porous roles of participants, the importance of relational expertise, and how we can look behind the seams of the quilt to uncover hidden labour involved in research projects.

Digital Craftsmanship, and other explorative design research practices using digital fabrication, depend on sample making and material exploration. Rather than describing a method of making use of the information present in samples co-inhabiting a timeline, this pictorial reports on the loose ends that may emerge out of the main journey, when taking a traveler's approach to making. By loose ends, we mean successful samples that are not suitable to the main inquiry of the present design research process, but that under certain circumstances can become starting points for new investigation lines. We describe four examples of such loose ends and introduce the concept of fellow travelers as a metaphor for describing the process of co-inhabiting a timeline and a journey while ultimately having diverging goals and outcomes.

HCI has historically provided little support for moving from feldwork insights or theories to design outcomes. Having witnessed many students struggle and then justify their designs with a form of marketing hype, we developed a supporting approach of "feld theories". A feld theory is a working theory about salient interactions in a particular domain and sensitizing concepts in order to frame design investigations. It is presented visually in a feld theory diagram to support succinct communication and critique. Studying use of design prototypes that have been informed by a feld theory helps to refect upon and refne the theory. In this paper we present examples from our HCI classes and refections based on interviews with students. We discuss how feld theories ofer an orientation in the spirit of a 'bricoleur' who harnesses elements of theory and practice to produce deeper understandings and more ftting outcomes for the task at hand.
