Parallel Web Browsing in Tangible Augmented Reality Environments

Abstract: Parallel browsing is the behavior of concurrently visiting multiple web pages. Modern web browsers use multiple windows and tabs to support different parallel browsing users' tasks. Yet, multiple windows and tabs have significant flaws that hinder users' performance. Our approach attempts to support parallel browsing with an Augmented Reality web browsing environment that mainly relies on Tangible Interaction. To verify our approach, we developed a prototype and carried out a short user-study. In the short use… Show more

“…(M6) Present Content via Multiple Modalities: Constructivists advocate for the inclusion of multiple modes of representation to help learner robustly build a mental construction of knowledge (P6); this will benefit from a spatially adaptive content delivery modality like XR which can utilize the entire 360°view for presenting a diverse content conveniently [62].…”

“…Multiple windows and tabs browsing in 2D may have flaws that hinder user performance due to limited UI space. However, a VR browsing environment can improve user viewing efficiency because of its tangible interaction pattern and greater space for browsing content [62]. There is also evidence that spatial UI design can decrease the number of manual interface adaptations [70].…”

“…The problem is that users feel frustration when repetitive tasks are involved in extracting content from different websites. [2] studied that multiple windows and tabs have significant flaws that hinder users' performance. Here, the approach is to empower end-users to develop extracting content functionality by themselves avoiding this problem.…”
