Parallel implementation of local thresholding in Mitrion-C

Abstract: Mitrion-C based implementations of three image processing algorithms: a look-up table operation, simple local thresholding and Sauvola's local thresholding are described. Implementation results, performance of the design and FPGA logic utilization are discussed.

“…The thermal properties of PVA, PMMA and of the as-spun nanofibrous membranes were investigated (TGA, NETSZCH, STA 409, CD) in air flux from room temperature to 700C at a heating rate of 1 K min - dataset does not allow to set a single threshold for the entire micrographs. The Sauvola algorithm [29,30] was thus used to perform local thresholds of the data. This algorithm works by dividing the input image into square windows (n × n pixel) and setting thresholds for each of them based on the mean and standard deviation of the pixel intensities.…”

“…Because of uneven illumination, setting a single threshold for all the micrographs was not feasible. Therefore the Sauvola algorithm [42], [43] was used to perform local thresholds of the data.…”

“…Therefore, most automatic parallelization mechanisms perform incompletely parallelization. Although there is few programing language that does not need to specify the detailed parallelization, such as SISAL [22], Parallel Haskell [16], Mitrion-C [18]. Due to the inherent difficulties in fully automatic parallelization, several easier approaches exist to get a parallel program in higher performance.…”
