“…In zebrafish, steroids are synthesized mainly from interrenal glands, which are a counterpart of the mammalian adrenal gland. At 24 hpf, P450ssc expression is detected when embryonic interrenal primordia start to develop, and the expression in the interrenal glands is detected all the way to adulthood (51). In this study, we observed that tspo has another expression profile.…”

“…First studies have demonstrated that early development of zebrafish interrenal glands resembles adrenal development in higher vertebrates (17)(18)(19). It has been demonstrated that ff1b, the zebrafish homolog of SF1, is required for interrenal differentiation and activation of side chain cleavage enzyme cyp11a1 (17,18,20). Accordingly, knockdown of ff1b activity by antisense morpholino technique led to down-regulation of interrenal steroidogenic enzymes and loss of interrenal tissue (17,18), similar to the phenotype in Sf-1 knockout mice (21).…”

“…In teleosts the steroidogenic cells, together with closely intermingled chromaffin cells, are embedded in the head kidney forming the interrenal organ, the homolog to the mammalian adrenal gland (15,16). First studies have demonstrated that early development of zebrafish interrenal glands resembles adrenal development in higher vertebrates (17)(18)(19). It has been demonstrated that ff1b, the zebrafish homolog of SF1, is required for interrenal differentiation and activation of side chain cleavage enzyme cyp11a1 (17,18,20).…”

“…No detailed ultrastructural studies were performed on the aminergic or steroidogenic components, but Fishelson, in a work on the ontogenesis and functional metamorphosis of the head kidney of some Teleostei Cichlidae, gave some outlines on interrenal and chromaffin cells (Fishelson 1996). More recently, some studies were performed in zebra fish on the differentiation and maturation of dorsal root and sympathetic ganglion neurons and chromaffin cells and on the regulation of development of the interrenal organ (Chai et al 2003, Hsu et al 2003.…”
