Spinel-type compounds of Fe-Ni-Sb-O system were synthesized as polycrystalline powders.The crystal and magnetic properties were investigated using X-ray and neutron powder diffraction, Mössbauer and X-ray absorption spectroscopy and magnetization measurements.The samples crystallize in the cubic system, space group Fd -3m. The distribution of cations between octahedral and tetrahedral sites was refined from the diffraction data sets using constraints imposed by the magnetic, Mössbauer and EDS results and the ionic radii. The cation distribution and the temperature dependence of the lattice parameter (a) and the oxygen positional parameter (u) were obtained. A chemical formula close to Fe 0.8 Ni 1.8 Sb 0.4 O 4 was determined, with Sb 5+ cations occupying octahedral sites, and Fe 3+ and Ni 2+ occupying both tetrahedral and octahedral sites. Fe 3+ mainly (85/15 ratio) occupy tetrahedral sites, and conversely Ni 2+ mainly reside on octahedral ones.The magnetic unit cell is the same as the crystallographic one, having identical symmetry relations. The results indicate that the compounds have a collinear ferrimagnetic structure with antiferromagnetic coupling between the tetrahedral (A) and octahedral (B) sites.Uniquely, the temperature dependence of the net magnetization of this rare earth free ferrimagnet exhibits a compensation point.

The association of Zn-Sb-As-Ba oxyminerals is of course rare, but largely reminiscent of assemblages found in the Långban-type Mn-Fe deposits (Holtstam et al 1998), situated in similar, contemporaneous host-rocks some 120 km southwest of the Garpenberg ore field.…”

Rinmanite, ideally Zn 2 Sb 2 Mg 2 Fe 4 O 14 (OH) 2 , is a new mineral species from the Garpenberg Norra Zn-Pb mine, Hedemora, Dalarna, in south-central Sweden, where it occurs in a skarn assemblage associated with tremolite, manganocummingtonite, talc, franklinite, barite and svabite. Rinmanite crystals are prismatic, up to 0.5 mm in length, with good {100} cleavage. The VHN 100 is in the range 841-907. D calc = 5.13(1) g•cm-3. The mineral is black (translucent dark red in thin splinters) with a submetallic luster. The mineral is moderately anisotropic and optically uniaxial (-). Reflectance values measured in air are 13.5-12.1% (= 470 nm), 12.9-11.8% (546 nm), 12.6-11.7 (589 nm) and 12.2-11.3% (650 nm). Electron-microprobe analyses of rinmanite (wt.%) gave MgO 8.97, Al 2 O 3 0.82, MnO 2.47, Fe 2 O 3 34.33, ZnO 14.24, Sb 2 O 5 36.31, H 2 O 1.99 (calculated), sum 99.13, yielding the empirical formula (Zn 1.58 Mn 0.31 Mg 0.06) ⌺1.95 Sb 2.03 [Mg 1.95 Fe 3.88 Al 0.15 ] ⌺5.98 O 14.01 (OH) 1.99. Rinmanite is hexagonal, space group P6 3 mc, with a 5.9889(4), c 9.353(1) Å, V 290.53(5) Å 3 and Z = 1. A structure refinement from single-crystal MoK␣ X-raydiffraction data (R = 3.1% for 199 reflections) shows that rinmanite is isostructural with nolanite. The octahedral M(1) and M(2) sites are occupied by (Mg + Fe) and Sb, respectively, whereas Zn is located at the 4-coordinated M(3) site. The strongest eight lines in the powder-diffraction pattern [d in Å (I obs)(hkl)] are: 5.19(20)(100), 3.47(34)(102), 2.99(43)(110), 2.67(44)(103), 2.522(100)(112), 1.660(28)(213), 1.517(33)(205) and 1.497(54)(220). Mössbauer spectroscopy confirms that rinmanite contains Fe 3+ at octahedral sites and is in a paramagnetic state down to at least 77 K. Rinmanite is believed to have formed during prograde metamorphism of an initially lowS , siliceous carbonate protolith enriched in Zn, Sb and Fe, at relatively high P(H 2 O). The new mineral species is named after Sven Rinman (1720-1792), of Bergskollegium.

The principal ore mineral was magnetite, but a few of the old mines intersect enclaves with Mn oxides (dominantly hausmannite) and associated skarns, including Mnbearing silicates and a number of exotic As-, Sb-, and Boxyminerals (e.g., Sjögren 1884; Holtstam and Langhof 1995;Holtstam et al 1998;Cooper et al 2018). This particular mineralisation is related to the Långban-type of deposits in the Paleoproterozoic Bergslagen ore region (Moore 1970b).…”

Brattforsite, Mn19(AsO3)12Cl2, a new arsenite mineral related to magnussonite, from Brattforsgruvan, Nordmark, Värmland, Sweden

Brattforsite is an approved mineral (IMA2019-127), with ideal formula Mn19(AsO3)12Cl2. Associated minerals in the type specimen from the Brattfors mine, Nordmark (Värmland, Sweden) include jacobsite, alleghanyite, phlogopite, calcite and dolomite. Brattforsite, forming subhedral, mostly equant crystals up to 0.5 mm across, is orange to reddish-brown with a white streak, and translucent with a resinous to vitreous lustre. The fracture is uneven to subconchoidal, and no cleavage is observed. It is very weakly pleochroic in yellow, optically biaxial (–) with 2V = 44(5)° and has calculated mean refractive index of 1.981. Measured and calculated density values are 4.49(1) and 4.54(1) g·cm− 3, respectively. Chemical analyses yields (in wt%): MgO 0.62, CaO 1.26, MnO 48.66, FeO 0.13, As2O3 46.72, Cl 2.61, H2Ocalc 0.07, O ≡ Cl –0.59, sum 99.49, corresponding to the empirical formula (Mn17.67Ca0.58Mg0.40Fe0.05)∑18.70As12.17O35.90Cl1.90(OH)0.20, based on 38 (O + Cl + OH) atoms per formula unit. The five strongest Bragg peaks in the powder X-ray diffraction pattern are [d (Å), I (%), (hkl)]: 2.843,100, ($$ \overline{4} $$ 4 - 44); 2.828, 99, (444); 1.731, 32, (880); 2.448, 28, (800); 1.739, 25, (088). Brattforsite is monoclinic and pseudotetragonal, space group I2/a, with unit-cell parameters a = 19.5806(7), b = 19.5763(7), c = 19.7595(7) Å, β = 90.393(3)°, V = 7573.9(5) Å3 and Z = 8. The crystal structure was solved and refined to an R1 index of 3.4 % for 7445 reflections [Fo > 4σ(Fo)]. Brattforsite has the same overall structural topology as magnussonite (i.e., the species can be considered as homeotypic), but with 12 independent tetrahedrally coordinated As sites and 21 Mn sites with varying (4–8) coordination. The Mn-centered polyhedra, bonded through edge- and face-sharing, give rise to a three-dimensional framework. The (AsO3)3− groups are bonded to this framework through corner- and edge-sharing. Spectroscopic measurements (optical absorption, Raman, FTIR) carried out support the interpretation of the compositional and structural data.
