Bilateral carotid body paraganglioma Resumo / SummaryOs paragangliomas do corpo carotídeo são lesões incomuns, embora representem a maioria dos paragangliomas da cabeça e pescoço. A presença de lesão bilateral é rara. Os autores apresentam um caso de paraganglioma bilateral, dando ênfase aos aspectos clínicos, diagnósticos e tratamento. Carot id body paragangliomas are uncommon lesions although in the head and neck region, these lesions are the most frequent ones. Bilateral lesions are rare. In three instances, the publication could not be obtained and had to be excluded [9,17,28].…”

The clinicopathologic features of two cases of paragangliomas of the larynx are presented along with immunohistochemical, ultrastructural and DNA image analysis. The world literature is also critically reviewed in order to develop a more accurate clinicopathologic profile of the tumor. The results indicate that paragangliomas of the larynx occur in patients averaging 47 years of age and are 3 times more common in women. Most (82%) arise from the supraglottic larynx and manifest clinically as hoarseness. They are typically benign and rarely functional. Almost all alleged malignant paragangliomas of the larynx are in reality atypical carcinoids that have been misdiag-nosed. Features that distinguish paragangliomas from other similar tumors are discussed.

Es wird Über eine 35jÄhrige Patientin mit beidseitigen Tumoren des Glomus caroticum und Glomus jugulare berichtet. Die Wertigkeit der verschiedenen diagnostischen Verfahren (B-Bildsonographie, Farb-Doppler-Sonographie, hochauflÖsende Computertomographie, Angiographie, Kernspintomographie und Somatostatinrezeptorszintigraphie) sowie die unterschiedlichen Therapiekonzepte werden diskutiert. Trotz fehlender positiver Familienanamnese erscheint auch bei Patienten mit sporadisch auftretenden Glomustumoren eine lebenslange Kontrolle erforderlich.
