Paraganglioma of the Urinary Bladder

Abstract: A paraganglioma of the urinary bladder in a 60-year-old woman presented with irritative voiding symptoms, without hematuria or hypertension. Sonography revealed a well-limited ovoid mass of the posterior wall, and cystoscopy showed that it was covered by normally appearing mucosa. Treatment consisted of transurethral resection, and the patient has been followed for 2 years without recurrence. Histologically the lesion consisted of small nests of spindle cells with clear to acidophilic cytoplasm; mitotic activi… Show more

“…Partial cystectomy with complete excision of the tumour is arguably the treatment of choice for patients with limited disease extent 3 . Patients with localized disease have been treated with transurethral resection with favourable outcomes after complete tumour resection 10,11 . In view of the sometimes unpredictable biological behaviour, long‐term follow up is, however, advised in these patients.…”

“…13 Hematuria and dysuria are the other common symptoms. 14 In the analysis of 53 reports of paraganglioma of the urinary bladder in Japan, only 3 cases (6%) had no hypertension, hematuria, or micturition attacks.…”

“…Other variants are a solid growth pattern, a spindle or sarcomatoid pattern, a trabecular or ribbon pattern, and a strikingly predominant vascular pattern. 13 The histopathologic diagnosis of paraganglioma is quite clear cut but still, in cases showing spindle and trabecular patterns differential diagnosis of Schwann cell and smooth muscle tumors and other endocrine tumors must be carried out. The other important problem is differentiating between paraganglioma and low-grade transitional epithelial tumor of the bladder.…”
