Paradigmatic restructuring and the diachrony of stem alternations in Chichimec

Abstract: Stem alternations contribute a unique type of morphological complexity to inflectional systems (Baerman et al. 2015), but despite the fact that they can show remarkable stability over time (Maiden 2018), the manner in which they are maintained and the types of changes they undergo are still poorly understood, in particular when it comes to understudied languages for which diachronic data are usually nonexistent. The verbal inflection of Chichimec (Oto-Pamean, Mexico) is characterized by intricate distributions… Show more

“…The issues, including the different combinations of principles involved in lexicalism, are carefully laid out by O'Neill (2016). In particular, we have seen quite specific morphology-internal mechanisms at work, which are different in kind from the workings of syntax (for another particularly cogent example see Feist & Palancar, 2021). However, we have gone to some lengths to show a linkage between internal and external splits.…”

“…A prominent concern of current morphological theorists is to develop holistic descriptions of entire inflectional systems, quantifying the overall complexity of the systems, exploring their organisational properties and identifying predictive generalisations about the behaviour of inflected forms (see e.g. Stump & Finkel 2013, Bonami 2014, Maiden 2018, Beniamine 2021, Feist & Palancar 2021, Palancar 2021. By contrast, to the extent that Swahili inflection figures in morphological discussion, it is in the context of illustrating morpheme-based approaches.…”

“…The behaviour of the inflectional morphology of the verb has been relatively well described (e.g. Lizárraga Navarro 2018;Palancar & Avelino 2019;Feist & Palancar 2021). Nominal inflection, by contrast, has been comparatively neglected.…”
