Paracrias pluteus (Hymenoptera, Eulophidae) in Brazil: new distribution and host records, and with a new host group for Paracrias

Abstract: Bruchines damage agricultural crops and trees, reducing the quantity and quality of the seeds. The aim of this study is to record, for the first time, Paracrias pluteus as a parasitoid on the immature stages of Sennius spodiogaster and Sennius cupreatus on seeds of Melanoxylon brauna in Teixeiras, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Paracrias pluteus is a parasitoid without previous host records and known only from Costa Rica. Specimens obtained in this study add to knowledge of the biology of Paracrias species with a… Show more

“…Paracrias species are exclusive to the New World, with great diversity in the tropics (Hansson, 2002). In Brazil, this species was first reported only recently (Pikart et al, 2011), with previous reports occurring in Costa Rica (Hansson, 2002). Although the literature confirms that little is currently known about this species, our results show that it is an abundant parasitoid of A. macrophthalmus, which is a new and important finding.…”

“…For example, most species of Pluteus are more well-known from wood remains and food (Menolli and Capelari 2010;Pikart et al 2011), but Pluteus has never been cultured from activated sludge, according to previous studies. Although Pluteus (7.6 %) was identified for the first time as the most abundant genus in activated sludge in this study, information regarding its particular metabolic abilities remains largely unavailable to date.…”

“… Paracrias spp. apparently exclusively target the order Coleoptera ( Hansson 2002 , Pikart et al 2011 ), so Paracrias seems an unlikely candidate as a parasitoid of ants. The concepts of the genera Paracrias and Horismenus – which have morphological features in common ( Hansson 2002 ) – were unclear at the time (1924) of the identification, so possibly this record actually also concerns a Horismenus species.…”
