Paracoccus onubensis sp. nov., a novel alphaproteobacterium isolated from the wall of a show cave

Abstract: A novel facultatively anaerobic, non-motile, Gram-stain-negative, non-endospore-forming alphaproteobacterium, strain 1011MAR3C25T, was isolated from a white biofilm colonizing the walls of the Andalusian show cave Gruta de las Maravillas (Huelva, Spain). Strain 1011MAR3C25T grew at 8–42 °C (optimum, 20–30 °C), at pH 5.0–9.0 (optimum, pH 5.0–6.0) and in the presence of 0–12 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum 3–5 %). Cells were catalase- and oxidase-positive. The strain grew heterotrophically with various carbon sources and … Show more

“…This bacterium was isolated and described from a Chinese cave [55]. The data indicate that caves are reservoirs for novel species of bacteria [34,35,[54][55][56] as shown by the isolation of a novel Paracoccus onubensis from the walls of Gruta de las Maravillas [57].…”

“…Transmission electron microscope and scanning electron microscope images are shown in Figs S4 and S5, respectively. Strains DK398 T and DK608 were found to be catalase- and oxidase-positive based on the observation of bubble production on 3 % (v/v) H 2 O 2 and oxidase testing in an identification tube, respectively [3]. API ZYM (BioMérieux, France), API 20E (BioMérieux, France), API 20NE (BioMérieux, France), and API 50CH (BioMérieux, France) strips were used to examine the biochemical features of the two strains.…”

“… Paracoccus forms a group of Gram-negative, coccoid, ovoid or short-rod-shaped, non-spore-forming, and non-motile cells [2]. Currently, the genus Paracoccus comprises 76 recognized species with validly published names (LPSN, https://lpsn.dsmz.de/genus/paracoccus), including two relatively new additions: Paracoccus onubensis 1011MAR3C25 T [3] and Paracoccus salsus EGI L200073 T [4]. Members of Paracoccus are mostly isolated from environmental sources such as sludge [5], soil [6], and sediment [7], and some from animals [8] and plants [9].…”
