PAPR reduction technique for FBMC based visible light communication systems

Abstract: One of the critical challenges in multicarrier-based systems is peak to average power ratio (PAPR). Recently, Filter Bank Multicarrier (FBMC) is proved to be a promising candidate that can replace the traditional orthogonal multiplexing division (OFDM) scheme due to its better spectral efficiency, reducing both inter-channel interference (ICI) and PAPR. Due to their advantages in reducing the PAPR without impacting the BER, the Hadamard transform was used in the proposed FBMC based VLC system. Furthermore, her… Show more

“…The combination of these two algorithms considerably improves the overall performance of the FBMC/OQAM system and ensures the trade-off between the PAPR, BER and computational complexity. In a visible light communication (VLC) based FBMC system, researchers suggest in [12] the clipping method with discrete cosine transform (DCT) precoding and Hadamard transform separately, then evaluate it with that of VLC-based OFDM. The VLC-based FBMC system performs better in terms of PAPR reduction and BER than the VLC-based OFDM system.…”

“…In this approach, the modulated data is multiplied by a pre-coding matrix at the transmitter before the IFFT block in the OFDM structure, and the inverse pre-coding matrix is applied at the receiver after the FFT block to recover the modulated data. Various transforms have been employed as pre-coding matrices to reduce PAPR, including discrete cosine transform (DCT), zadoff-chu transform (ZCT), discrete Fourier transform (DFT) [14], walsh-hadamard transform (WHT) [15], discrete hartley transform (DHT) [16], and vandermonde-like matrix (VLM) transform [17]. Pre-coding has a number of advantages over other approaches, including signal independence, no requirement for signalling overhead, and no significant degradation in BER performance [18].…”

“…This combined method achieves a modest PAPR improvement of approximately 1 dB without compromising BER performance when compared to the DCT pre-coded method. In [15], the DCT pre-coding scheme is integrated with the clipping method to decrease PAPR for DCO-OFDM, yielding an enhancement of approximately 2 dB. The study outlined in [21] simultaneously applies multiple DCT pre-coding techniques to an IM/DD system by grouping subcarriers.…”
