“…Like many observers before and since, the authors grappled with the question of whether the villous adenoma represented a specific pathologic entity or was simply one end of a morphologic continuum of benign neoplasia of the large bowel. The authors cited several reports suggesting that villous adenomas were at the very least closely related to adenomas of the more common and typical tubular variety 2‐4. David, in describing 8 cases in 1925, recognized a close correlation, whereas Fitzgibbon and Rankin in 1931 and Helwig in his landmark paper in 1947 considered the papilloma (villous adenoma) not a separate entity but rather a variation in growth pattern that could occur in all adenomas.…”
