Papillary tumours of the minor salivary glands.

Abstract: The clinical and histological features of oncocytic adenomatous hyperplasia, papillary adenoma, and papillary adenocarcinoma of the oral cavity are described, and the literature is reviewed. Histological features which may be of value in distinguishing between benign and malignant variants are described, and in view of the slow growth rate of most of these tumours, the importance of long-term follow-up is stressed.

“…8 Some cases of papillary oncocytic cystadenoma in minor salivary glands have been reported in literature. 8,9 But in the present case PTAH positivity was restricted to normal salivary gland, ruling out the presence of oncocytes in the tumor proper. The presence of oncocytes in the salivary gland could be explained by metaplastic transformation of cells in response to adverse changes, probably the adjacent tumor component with the normal cells losing their original specialization.…”

“…Among the cases reviewed, majority of cystadenomas occurred in patients above the age of 50 years (Table 2). According to the literature, the cystadenomas are more frequent in males than in females [5], but occasionally female predominance is mentioned (male to female ratio 1:2.3) [11]. Among the 28 case reports summarized in Table 2, the incidence is higher in males (n = 15) compared with females (n = 12) with female to male ratio of 1:1.25.…”
