Papillary Squamous Cell Carcinoma of thec Larynx

Abstract: Papillary squamous cell carcinoma is a rare variant of squamous cell carcinoma of the aerodigestive tract that has been correlated with a more favorable prognosis than conventional squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck. In this report, the authors present a case of papillary squamous cell carcinoma and a review of the literature on this topic.

“…uicide is a significant cause of death in most Western countries and is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States. 1 In patients with cancer, the risk for suicide is even higher; patients with cancer in the United States have nearly twice the incidence of suicide as the US general population. 2,3 While affective illness and alcoholism are the most important determinants of suicide in the physically healthy population, vulnerability to suicide in patients with cancer is influenced by a number of other factors, including psychosocial and psychosomatic effects of advanced illness, pain, organic mental syndromes, and preexisting psychopathologic abnormalities.…”

“…Image depicting laryngeal tumor invading into the paraglottic space modality. 15,16 These papillary lesions do represent a separate variant from the verrucous subtype, despite the similar external appearance of the lesions. The cellular differentiation, cellular atypia, and clinical features of the disease differ, and consultation with the histopathologist will often determine the underlying SCC variant.…”

“…These lesions are associated with human papillomavirus (HPV) viral infection, and generally have improved prognosis when compared with their traditional counterparts. Many lesions do not exhibit membrane invasion, and local control and survival is excellent regardless of treatment modality . These papillary lesions do represent a separate variant from the verrucous subtype, despite the similar external appearance of the lesions.…”

“…Despite the generally benign nature of squamous papillomas, they can show clinically extensive growth with prominent viral‐type cytologic atypia and cellular proliferation on biopsy that raises suspicion for malignancy. Conversely, truly malignant papillary squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) and premalignant papillary squamous dysplasias can present as solitary papillary lesions with a relatively uniform histologic appearance that mimics a benign process . To further complicate this differential diagnosis, a small fraction of squamous papillomas can develop dysplastic changes or undergo malignant transformation into SCC .…”

[2][3][4] To further complicate this differential diagnosis, a small fraction of squamous papillomas can develop dysplastic changes or undergo malignant transformation into SCC. 5,6 Nevertheless, accurate classification of these lesions is essential to guide appropriate management.…”
