Papillary cystadenocarcinoma of submandibular salivary gland: A rare case report

Abstract: Papillary cystadenocarcinoma is an extremely rare malignant neoplasm characterized by cysts and papillary endophytic projections. It was first defined in 1991 by World Health organization as a separate entity. Major locations of this neoplasm are the parotid gland, the sublingual gland, and minor salivary glands, while occurrence in the submandibular gland is extremely rare. We present a case of papillary cystadenocarinoma arising from the submandibular gland in a 67-year-old male patient. Further, we have dis… Show more

“…It is conceptually the malignant counterpart of benign cystadenoma and the histological diagnosis rests on actual infiltration of surrounding parenchyma and underlying connective tissue. [ 1 ] There are a few reports describing its cytological features.…”

“…Major locations in decreasing order of frequency include minor salivary gland, parotid gland, and submandibular gland. [ 1 ] It accounts for 2% of all malignant salivary gland tumors. [ 2 ] The cytological features can overlap with various benign and malignant neoplasms having papillary pattern.…”

“…67 Many cell types can be observed in CAC including small cuboidal (constituting the majority of the neoplastic cells), tall cuboidal, tall columnar, mucinous, finely vacuolated (soap-bubble like appearance), clear, oncocytic and rarely, focal epidermoid cells. 60,64,[68][69][70][71] Osseous metaplasia has also been observed in CAC. 72 Finally, it is worth mentioning that CAC can only be differentiated form cystadenoma histologically, by demonstrating an infiltrative growth into adjacent salivary gland tissue.…”
