Papillary carcinoma of the prostate, location, morphology, and immunohistochemistry: The histogenesis and entity of so‐called endometrioid carcinoma

Abstract: Fifty carcinomas that were partially to completely papillary in nature were examined. According to urethroscopic and rectal palpation findings, six of the carcinomas were located centrally, 40 tumors were in the prostate proper, and four were clinical stage T0. The epithelium of the papillary portions of the tumors was dark in some instances, light in others. Immunohistochemistry revealed that 20 of 22 tumors were positive for prostatic acid phosphatase (PAP) and prostate-specific antigen (PSA). In no case was… Show more

“…Other authors had published reports of prostatic ductal carcinoma, morphologically identical to endometrioid carcinoma, but originating in the primary or secondary ducts of the prostate and hence distant from any vestigial uterine tissue. Wenert et al 14 made a detailed study of this topic and tried to disprove the prostatic utricle origin of the lesion, the peri-urethral transition zone, adjacent to the main ejaculatory ducts having been suggested as a possible site of origin. Clearly a variety of locations within the ductal system of the prostate are possible.…”

“…Due to its appearance, ductal adenocarcinoma was previously thought to arise from Mullerian remnants and possess unique clinical features related to its origin. 7 While further analyses have shown that these tumors do arise from prostatic tissue, 8, 9 speculation regarding the unique clinical features of this tumor remains.…”

“…13,14 This designation was later discarded on the basis of microscopic, ultrastructural and immunohistochemical findings and these tumours are now regarded as adenocarcinomas arising from primary prostatic ducts. 10 …”
