Paper microfluidic device and spectrophotometry methods for colorimetric detection of phenylephrine hydrochloride in pure and pharmaceutical preparations

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Two easy-to-use, rapid, and inexpensive colorimetric-based assays for the detection of active constituent in nasal decongestant phenylephrine hydrochloride (PHP), in solution and their respective pharmaceutical preparations were reported. The assay principle depends on the diazotized sulfadimidine (DSDM) coupling with PHP active pharmaceutical compound under alkaline conditions to produce a colored azo-dye product. A UV/VIS spectrophotometry method was utilized to monitor the color absorbance change … Show more

“…For AMX: A calibration curve was constructed by plotting the absorbance of the AMX working solution in the range of (2,4,6,10,15,20,25,30) mg L − 1 prepared by serial dilution of the 500 μg mL − 1 stock solution into 10 mL volumetric flasks. Then, both 2.5 mL of DSDM (10 mM) and 0.25 mL of NaOH (0.5 M) were added.…”

“…Key parts of this development process include ensuring purity during quality control and the analysis of the active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) [ 1 ]. Most of the techniques used [ 2 ] require relatively sophisticated instruments, costly reagents or complex, multistep sample preparation [ 3 , 4 ]. In low- and middle-income countries issues of poor quality pharmaceuticals persist [ 5 ].…”

“…μ-PADs possess competitive advantages over conventional analytical instruments, such as being inexpensive, portability and simplicity. They are also identified as point-of-care devices and successfully applied in several fields such as diagnostics, biological, food safety, environmental monitoring and biotechnology [22][23][24][25][26][27][28][29].…”
