Pantoprazole-Na Release from Poly(acrylamide-co-crotonic acid) and Poly(acrylic acid-co-crotonic acid) Hydrogels

Abstract: Poly(acrylamide-co-crotonic acid) (PAAmCA), poly(acrylic acidco-crotonic acid) (PAACA), PAA and PAAm hydrogels were prepared by free radical polymerization and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as a crosslinker. The variations of swelling values (%) with time, temperature, and pH were determined for four types of hydrogels. The PAACA hydrogel was swollen 2300% at pH ¼ 7.4 and 378C. The drug release from pantoprazole-Na loaded PAACA and PAAmCA hydrogels was followed at pH ¼ 7.4, 378C for 30 h. The release … Show more

“…Figure 1 represents the variation of S% values with time at pH = 7.4, 37 • C. Four different hydrogels are prepared in this study. Swelling values of pure PAAm and PAA hydrogels based on our previous studies are also added into the same graphic for explanation and comparison of the swelling behaviors [23]. It is seen that the S% values increases with time at first and then keep constant near 24 h. According to the ionic character the most swollen gel is PAA.…”

“…At the end of this period, glass tubes were carefully broken and obtained hydrogel rod were cut into small discs of 0.5 cm length. The gel discs were washed several times with distilled water to remove unreacted chemicals, dried first in air and then in a vacuum oven at 37.0 • C [16,[20][21][22][23]. The average thicknesses of dried hydrogels measured with a micrometer were found in the range of 0.30-0.40 cm according to the content of the gel matrix.…”

“…Many SPHs are of high swelling ratio but low strength, including those based entirely upon acrylic acid. Acrylamide-based SPHs [5] tend to be stronger, although studied in drug delivery, acrylamide-based hydrogels may not be acceptable for certain pharmaceutical and biomedical applications [6,7].…”

“…These are termed ''intelligent'' or ''smart'' hydrogels [3][4][5][6] as they release drugs at a specific time and place in the body based on a stimulus [7][8][9].…”
