Pantoea agglomerans: An Elusive Contributor to Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Exacerbation

Abstract: The ubiquitously present gram-negative bacteria Pantoea agglomerans is not a commonly known human pathogen. Recently, increasing recognition of the species as a human pathogen has led to controversy as limited documented cases of P. agglomerans bacteremia and infections have been reported in the literature, with most cases reported among immunocompromised patients or the pediatric population. Here, we present the case of a 54-year-old female with P. agglomerans and Enterococcus faecium bacteremia along with ch… Show more

“…It is underlined that inhaled Pseudomonas. agglomerans endotoxins could determine the activation of alveolar macrophages and secretion of mediators such as interleukin-1, tumor necrosis factor (TNF), and prostaglandins, that lead to the accumulation of platelets in pulmonary capillaries triggering acute and chronic inflammation and later to bronchoconstriction, reduced forced expiratory volume in the first second, reduced diffusing capacity of the lung for carbon monoxide, and increased airway reactivity, which leads to significant respiratory symptoms ( Shrestha B et al., 2021 ).…”

“…Among the pathological effects, acute and chronic inflammation have been reported, resulting in damage to the endothelial cells and the leakage of cells and fluids into the pulmonary interstitium. These changes cause bronchoconstriction, fever, irritation of the airways, and chest tightness [ 29 , 90 ]. Although other microbial and plant constituents are also considered to be potential causative agents of byssinosis (i.e., reactive airway disease), the endotoxin produced by P. agglomerans strains and other Gram-negative bacteria in cotton dust is still considered to be a major cause of the disease.…”

“…and circumstances of exposure. Out of Gram-negative bacteria associated with wood dust a special attention should be paid in this respect to the ubiquitous species Pantoea agglomerans , recently indicated as an agent causing exacerbations of the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (Shrestha et al 2021 ). Earlier, it has been demonstrated experimentally that this species produces as well a potent endotoxin (Dutkiewicz 1976 ; Rylander and Lundholm 1978 ).…”
