Osteoporosis is an age-related health problem involving estrogen deficiency and the hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is still widely used as an antiresorptive agent. However, the effect on bone microarchitecture needs to be further investigated. To evaluate the effect of HRT on mandibular bone architecture in postmenopausal women using fractal analysis on digital panoramic radiographs. Seventy-five digital panoramic images including 25 images of women aged 20-39 years (negative control, G1), 25 images of women aged 40-59 years who were not taking HRT (positive control, G2) and 25 images of women aged 40-59 years who were taking HRT (G3) were submitted to fractal analysis using ImageJ software to compare the bone density between the groups. Statistical differences were observed between the fractal indexes in the 3 groups on both sides and the fractal dimension (FD) of group G3 was statistically greater than that of G1 and G2 on both sides. A significant moderate positive correlation (0.3<ϕ<0.49) was found between age and FD on the left mandible in G3. Postmenopausal women under HRT present higher values for FD and these agents can affect the architecture of mandibular bone.

RESUMENLos accidentes cerebro vasculares (ACV) representan un grave problema de salud pública, ya que causan secuelas de importancia e inclusive la muerte. Aproximadamente el 60% de los sobrevivientes sufren discapacidad lo cual tiene altos costos involucrados en el tratamiento y la rehabilitación de los pacientes. Cerca del 20% de los ACV son el resultado de la separación o ruptura de una placa aterosclerótica en la región de la arteria Carótida. La identificación de placas ateromatosas en la región carotidea, a través de la radiografía Panorámica, representa un hallazgo de relevancia porque contribuye con el diagnóstico precoz de una lesión grave que puede causar daños irreversibles en la salud. Sin embargo, la evaluación correcta de esta radiografía aún representa un desafío para el odontólogo general. El propósito de este artículo es realizar una revisión de la literatura sobre la prevalencia de ateromas calcificados de arteria Carótida (ACAC) detectados en radiografías panorámicas de pacientes asintomáticos y en presencia de enfermedades sistémicas y periodontales, así como los factores de riesgo asociados. Del mismo modo revisar las estructuras radiopacas proyectadas en la zona de interés que podrían llevar a confusión en la identificación de los ACAC.Palabras clave. ABSTRACTCerebrovascular accidents (CVA) are a major public health problem, as they cause major consequences or death, Approximately 60% of survivors suffer disability wich has high costs involved in the treatment and rehabilitation of patients. About 20% of strokes are a result of separation or rupture of an atherosclerotic plaque in the carotid artery region. The identification of atheromatous plaques in the carotid region, through panoramic radiography, is a finding of relevance because it contributes to the early diagnosis of a serious injury that can cause irreversible damage to health. However, the correct assessment of this radiograph still represents a challenge to the general practitioner. The purpose of this article is to review the literature on the prevalence of calcified carotid artery atheroma (CCAA) detected on panoramic radiographs of asymptomatic patients and in the presence of systemic and periodontal diseases and associated risk factors. Similary check the radiopaque structures designed in the area of interest that could lead to confusion in the identification of the CCAA.Keywords. Panoramic radiography, atherosclerotic plaque. How accurate is information about the diagnosis and management of temporomandibular disorders on dentist websites?da commentary To the Editor: I congratulate Desai et al. 1 on their unique work pertaining to the content analysis of dentist websites. The article is very informative and helps dentists understand their patients. I have a few queries regarding the data analysis reported in the article. I request the authors to clarify the following: 1. Table I presented an analysis using Fisher's exact test, but it was a 2 Â 5 table. 2. The P value in Table I is not accurate. 3. P values presented in Tables II and III reflect Chisquared test P values, but the authors have reported them to be values from Fisher's exact test.
