Panoramic images of white and black post-menopausal females evidencing carotid calcifications are at high risk of comorbid osteopenia of the femoral neck

Abstract: Objectives: Femoral neck fractures in older females resulting from decreased bone mineral density (BMD; osteopenia) are associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Bone mineralization inhibition is probably controlled by proteins which also foster vascular calcification. Therefore, we evaluated the relationship between calcified carotid artery plaque (CCAP) on panoramic images and BMD on dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) bone scans. Methods: Images and hospital records identified by dentists define… Show more

“…Panoramic radiographs are regularly requested as a complementary diagnostic examination by dentists and, sometimes, important manifestations of systemic diseases can be found in the gnathic bones [15][16][17][18][19]. Among these, low bone mineral density and morphological changes in trabecular bone reinforce the use of panoramic radiograph together with some clinical parameters to identify patients with osteoporosis [1,20,21].…”

“…27 publicaron una investigación realizada en mujeres posmenopáusicas, el objetivo fue evaluar la relación entre ACAC en radiografías panorámicas y las imágenes de densidad ósea mineral de exámenes de densitometría ósea. Trabajaron con 20 mujeres de raza blanca y 24 de raza negra, llegando a la conclusión de que en presencia de ACAC la densidad ósea es menor.…”

“…We really appreciate the important comments from Graves et al 1 Since the Japanese nationwide survey started in 1987, the number of hip fracture patients continues to increase; 175,700 patients had hip fractures in 2012. 2 On the other hand, hip fracture rates among persons aged 65 years and older declined in the United States between 1986 and 2005. 3 In 2010, the greatest number of men and women at high risk of fragility fractures were from Asia (55%).…”
