Generation of a Panorama Compatible with the JPEG 360 International Standard Using a Single PTZ Camera

Recently, the JPEG working group (ISO/IEC JTC1 SC29 WG1) developed an international standard, JPEG 360, that specifies the metadata and functionalities for saving and sharing 360-degree images efficiently to create a more realistic environment in various virtual reality services. We surveyed the metadata formats of existing 360-degree images and compared them to the JPEG 360 metadata format. We found that existing omnidirectional cameras and stitching software packages use formats that are incompatible with the JPEG 360 standard to embed metadata in JPEG image files. This paper proposes an easy-to-use tool for embedding JPEG 360 standard metadata for 360-degree images in JPEG image files using a JPEG-defined box format: the JPEG universal metadata box format. The proposed implementation will help 360-degree cameras and software vendors provide immersive services to users in a standardized manner for various markets, such as entertainment, education, professional training, navigation, and virtual and augmented reality applications. We also propose and develop an economical JPEG 360 standard compatible panoramic image acquisition system from a single PTZ camera with a special-use case of a wide field of view image of a conference or meeting. A remote attendee of the conference/meeting can see the realistic and immersive environment through our PTZ panorama in virtual reality.

Tourism industry can promote the prosperity of the local economy. In addition, the booming tourism business in recent years has also led to the development of related industries and services. According to high-tech technologies such as cloud computing, hybrid cloud, and panoramic image, we will plan to design a comprehensive and integrated architecture model of scenic spots that integrates all tourism information and various services, strive to create smart scenic spots, bring the best play experience to tourists, and strive to attract more attention and attention. The results show that (1) the overall average satisfactory approval of UI test is as high as 93%, which can meet the requirements. (2) After the improved panoramic image mosaic method, the correct rate is as high as 93.90%, the effect is 4.90% better than that before the improvement, and the algorithm is more efficient. (3) The scenic spot configuration management effect is excellent, and various situations in the scenic spot are effectively monitored. (4) The average response time per request of the original system is about 161 ms. Compared with the original system, the response time of the new system is reduced by about 57%, and the access success rate is 100%. The system in the experiment runs well and satisfies the integration of tourism information resources and services in scenic spots.

In recent years, the production of panoramic images has been boosted by the increasing use of digital photographiccameras and mobile phones. However, for highly demanding applications such as long-range deformation monitoring, theaccuracy and quality control of panoramic images and processes used to obtain accurate 3D models should be properlyassessed. Therefore, prior to being applied in real projects, the quality of the spherical panoramic images generated bythree widely used computer programs (Agisoft Metashape, GigaPan Stitch and PTGui) is evaluated using the same imagesof a photogrammetric laboratory full of control points and an outdoor environment by shooting from several stations. Inaddition to the assessment of the geometrical accuracy, the study also includes important aspects for practical efficiencysuch as workflow, speed of processing, user-friendliness, or exporting products and formats available. The results of thecomparisons show that Agisoft Metashape meets the required geometric specifications with higher quality and has clearadvantages in performance if compared to the other two tested programs.
