Panic as an Independent Risk Factor for Suicide Attempt in Depressive Illness

Abstract: Panic attacks appear to be an independent risk factor for suicide attempt among depressed individuals with and without suicidal ideation. Further, panic attacks, particularly those characterized by prominent catastrophic cognitions, may mediate the transition from suicidal ideations to suicide attempts in subjects with depressive episodes. Assessment of these symptoms may improve prediction of suicide attempts in clinical settings.

“…The partial items of the SS_ORP and HADS-A_ORP were related to symptoms of panic attack, such as dizziness, chest pain, shortness of breath, palpitation, a sort of frightened feeling, restless feeling, and sudden feelings of panic. MDD comorbid with panic attack or disorder is related to a poorer prognosis, such as an increased risk of suicide attempt and treatment-resistant depression [25,26,27]. This might be one of the possible reasons for our results.…”

“…The first limitation is the uncertainty of the definition of suicidality itself in this study. Although the authors used the dichotomized score of the MINI-Plus suicide module similarly to previous studies [17,18,19], several past studies [12,44,45] have used a different definition of suicidality and have shown that different panic symptoms are associated with suicidal ideation versus a suicide attempt, and the severity of suicidal ideation is a rather weak predictor of suicide and suicide attempts. In the present study, 24 of 427 patients with PD (5.6%) reported a history of lifetime suicide attempts.…”

“…Our findings support earlier observations that comorbidity amplifies the risk of suicidality (Bolton et al 2008, Sareen et al 2005). Panic disorder is also known to be an independent risk factor for suicide attempts in depressive illness (Katz et al 2011). However, after multiple regression only obsessive-compulsive symptomatology significantly predicted suicidality in both sub-groups and the overall group, as well as depression in the overall group.…”
